Recently the authors had reported that the Ly-W5-SM
r strain was isolated from SMresistant strain (W5-SM
rof Mycobacterium tuberculosis, as lysogenic strain by phage PH. This strain was not SMr only also other antitubercle agents.
In this study, Ly-W5-SMr strain was examined in biological properties used with a kit of the identification for Mycobacterium and virulence in mice and guinea pigs. The results as following:
1) The biological characters of W5 and W5-SM
r were shown identical with the cha racters of Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv, but the negative of urease activity and nitrate reducting, furthermore the poor activity of niacin production were recognized on the Ly- W5-SM
r strain.
2) The virulence of the Ly-W5-SM
r strain for mice was compared similarly with those with other strain; W5, W5-SM
r and H37Rv. But the virulence of Ly-W5-SM
r strain for guinea pigs was lower than those with other strains.
3) These results were suggested that the Ly-W5-SMr strain showed to similar chara cters of atypical mycobacterium, but the identical properties as it was not yet confirmed.
