    For 14 years from 1971 through 1984, we made a research on the infections con dition of pulmonary tuberculosis for university students throughout the country. As a result, it was revealed that the rate of detection of such new patients in periodical medical checkups was under 0.02% from 1982 on compared with 0.055% in 1971.
    There was practically no significant difference in rate of detection by academic years 0.017-0.020%, however, the rate for students in the register for more than 4 years 0.069% is over 3 times that for students in the register for 4 years or less.
    Detection of the disease on other occasions than periodical medical checkups showed a tendency to increasing slightly. Such tendency was remarkable in sophomores and juniors.
    During 4 years from 1981 through 1984, no patient was detected in 8 out of 51 univer sities. These 8 universities were not always small ones.

    Sixty three patients with tuberculosis pleurisy, 47 males and 16 females aged from 17 to 97, were studied clinically and further on the factors influencing the subside process of pleural effusion and fever.
    Tubercle bacilli were detected in 6 patients (9.5%) in pleural effusion. The positivity of pleural biopsy was 62.6% (23/37). The main subjective symptoms were fever, cough and chest pain. Twenty five patients (39.7%) were accompanied by active extrapleural tuberculosis. Purified protein derivative skin test was performed in 59 patients and 12 (20.3%) were not positive.
    Subside pattern of pleural effusions were divided into three groups; pleural effusions subside almost completely within two months after chemotherapy (type 1), pleural effusions decrease markedly within two months after chemotherapy, however, there are some shadows as related to the pleurisy at that time (type 2), and pleural effusions decrease much slower than type 2 (type 3). Pleural effusions subsided more rapidly in younger patients and in the group treated earlier with chemotherapy. Normalization of body tem perature tended the same pattern as subside pattern of pleural effusions.

    Serum angiotensin-converting enzyme(S-ACE)was measured in twenty five patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (four: miliary tuberculosis, twenty one: non-miliary tuber culosis) and in twenty five healthy subjects. S-ACE was determined by fluorimetric as sey (modified Lieberman method).
    The mean value of S-ACE in normal controls was 27.5±μ6.3g/m/l with range 21.0 to 34.0μE/ml. Four patients with miliary tuberculosis had elevated levels of S-ACE (mean 49.6±9.4, range 39.9 to 65.7).On the other hand, twenty one patients with nonmiliary tuberculosis had normal ACE levels (mean 28.3±10.2, range 14.1 to 52.1). According to the chest X-ray (Gakkai classification), eleven patients with extensive bilateral tuberculosis showed higher ACE levels (mean 36.2±14.8, range 14.1 to 48.3) than those of twelve patients with unilateral tuberculosis (mean 28.7±10.3, range 11.9 to 52.1), but there was no significant difference between both groups. There was also no significance between the S-ACE levels and arterial Po2 levels and excretion of acid fast bacilli.
    It is concluded that the S-ACE is elevated in miliary tuberculosis but normal in non miliary tuberculosis. The elevation of S-ACE level in miliary tuberculosis may be due to the systemic activation of the reticuloendothelial system.

    Recently the authors had reported that the Ly-W5-SMr strain was isolated from SMresistant strain (W5-SMrof Mycobacterium tuberculosis, as lysogenic strain by phage PH. This strain was not SMr only also other antitubercle agents.
    In this study, Ly-W5-SMr strain was examined in biological properties used with a kit of the identification for Mycobacterium and virulence in mice and guinea pigs. The results as following:
    1) The biological characters of W5 and W5-SMr were shown identical with the cha racters of Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv, but the negative of urease activity and nitrate reducting, furthermore the poor activity of niacin production were recognized on the Ly- W5-SMr strain.
    2) The virulence of the Ly-W5-SMr strain for mice was compared similarly with those with other strain; W5, W5-SMr and H37Rv. But the virulence of Ly-W5-SMr strain for guinea pigs was lower than those with other strains.
    3) These results were suggested that the Ly-W5-SMr strain showed to similar chara cters of atypical mycobacterium, but the identical properties as it was not yet confirmed.
