The goal of this research is to concretely clarify practical knowledge, such as developmental processes and instructional strategies, utilized by teachers in the creation of Japanese language units. In order to achieve this goal, I transcribed the discussion details of three separate investigative meetings, which were run to inquire how elementary school veteran teachers developed their learning material for Japanese language literature units. This transcribed data was analyzed using a qualitative coding method, in order to extract the instructional strategies and investigate the developmental process. As a result of this analysis, 29 concepts relating to instructional strategies were extracted, which were placed into three categories: “strategies for creating material based on practical experience,” “realized strategies for unit development,” and “realized strategies used at the place lessons were developed.” Through this analysis, it was possible to thereby concretely clarify the unit development process.

On a recorder a performer can control the pitch of each individual note. Thus, it is possible to produce a chord with pure intonation. However, due to elementary school music programs placing an overemphasis on correct finger positioning and the ability to read music notation, it is my belief that the unique characteristics of the recorder are not being fully utilized. The development of students’ abilities to produce chords with pure intonation will enhance the beauty of their chords, and thus, improve the overall quality of the music they express. Therefore, this study examined effects of the instruction to help elementary school students produce these chords on their abilities. At the initial stage of this study I constructed a tentative teaching plan and gave practical lessons to 3rd, 4th, and 6th grade students and analyzed the results. Problems arose in the teaching of major and minor thirds to the 4th grade students. However, my plan was effective in developing the 3rd and 6th grade students’ abilities to produce chords with pure intonation.

This study aimed to examine effects of a program in the form of physical education classes to improve throwing ability in fourth-grade students on the learning of baseball-type games in their fifth grade. The results revealed that classes aimed to improve throwing ability not only enhanced the students’ enthusiastic attitudes toward physical education but also led to significant improvements in the evaluation point of their long-distance throwing and throwing movements. An analysis of the effects of different learning experiences further revealed that students who had learning experiences in throwing exercises showed more enthusiasm for baseball-type games. In addition, students who experienced learning of throwing exercise demonstrated higher throwing and catching skills in the initial stage of the Game Performance Assessment Instrument (GPAI). Furthermore, when not in possession of the ball, the same students also displayed superior support toward other students, who may or may not be holding the ball, and better maneuvered when moving to cover another base. These students also showed better understanding of the tactical aspects of baseball-type games.

The purpose of this study is to examine how European kyoka-kyoiku-kenkyusha (academics who perform research on school subjects/subject pedagogy) perceive their social responsibilities. The study is mainly based on the interviews conducted on the three researchers in charge of subject pedagogy (didactics), and the examination of the context. To analyze the data, this study adopted four areas for an analytical framework: teacher education, research, social service, and administration. The three main findings of our analysis are as follows. First, there are differences between the three researchers in the way they fulfill their social responsibilities. For example, one researcher appears to place the main responsibility on research, and seems to believe that the other areas extend from it. Meanwhile another researcher seems to relate these four areas in a balanced manner. Second, the personal interests and beliefs of all sampled researchers seem to connect to subject pedagogy, and their activities could be supported by the missions and policies of their universities and the European contexts. Third, despite the small number of interviews, the patterns of fulfilling social responsibilities shown by the three researchers suggest the possibility of expanding research and practice in subject pedagogy.

Katazuke, which means cleaning up or tidying up, is one of the words that expresses Japan’s everyday culture. The purpose of this research is to consider the educational effect of Katazuke learning in elementary school Home Economics. The focus of this paper is on designing classes focusing on the Katazuke of common space, and on exploring educational effects produced by the classes. From the results of the questionnaire survey before and after the class, improvement in consciousness regarding Katazuke actions that lead to the ease of use of the common space for others as well as for the child performing the actions can be confirmed throughout the class. Concerning children with low motivation toward cleaning up, it was confirmed that improvement in the way of comprehending Katazuke acts, such as noticing that Katazuke is an act for others, raises the awareness that the children should Katazuke (tidy up) the things that they themselves have used. In the learning of Katazuke of the common space, improvement was seen in consciousness concerning Katazuke, including consideration and respect for others. The value of looking at Katazuke learning from the viewpoint of others was also shown.

The purpose of this study is to clarify trends and issues of educational objectives in lesson plans of home economics “Family and Family Life” field in junior high school through analysis with “Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy” theory. In this study, description of today’s educational objectives, learning activities and contents and evaluation criteria in lesson plans were classified into adopted knowledge and requested cognitive, and were categorized major types into the knowledge dimension and the cognitive process dimension(L. W. Anderson et al, 2001). The four results are as follows: (1) Today’s educational objectives were used the same words as the description of instruction in the course of study, and was high in abstraction level. (2) There were some lesson plans which had some contradictions between today’s educational objectives and interpretation clarification of educational objectives. (3) Instruction of “Family and Family Life” field mostly has set “understand conceptual knowledge” as its objective. Description of “understanding” was to summarize learning contents on notebooks or worksheets, to present examination or ideas from discussion. (4) This study couldn’t find the quality of the knowledge in lesson plan.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the views on physical education instruction that students, aspiring to be elementary school teachers, who attended “physical education research,” a course in the teaching methods of each subject, had and to understand how their views on physical education instruction changed. The results revealed the following three points. 1) Views on physical education instruction that students aspiring to be elementary school teachers had before and after attending the lectures were classified into “practice during the class,” “what they would like the children to learn,” and “children’s learning.” 2) Changes were observed in the number of described categories regarding the preservice teachers’ views on physical education instruction before and after attending the lectures. Specifically, the number of descriptions about the views on instruction regarding “safety management” decreased. On the other hand, the number of descriptions about the views on instruction regarding “practice during the class” increased. 3) It was suggested that what was learned during the lectures and the students’ experiences as teachers and learners in mock lessons affected the changes in their views on physical education instruction.
