A small portable strontium-90-barium X-ray source, designed by Dr. M. Brucer (ORINS), is introduced. This is a type of β-ray excited X-ray device, the source of which is the intimate mixture of stable barium powder and 100 me strontium-90-yttrium-90 as a high speed electron source.
The design of this device is shown in detail.
The differential spectrum of this X-rays has revealed the peak of the continuous Bremsstrahlung at about 110-120 keV energies, and the half-value-layer of aluminum was found to be 6, 100-6, 200 mg/cm
2, corresponding to about 100 effective keV.
Poor definition in clinical X-ray picture is considered due to relative high penetrating power and large target size.
The problems to meet better clinical purpose are discussed, taking this source as an example.
