Commercially available zener diodes have been tested for applying them to dosimetry of cobalt-60 γ-rays. The response observed, i.e. the relation between irradiated dose and radiation-induced change in the breakdown voltage of the zener diode, have shown good linearity under the conditions: (1) The diode is kept below 50°C during irradiation. (2) Measurement of the change in the breakdown voltage were made at the liquid-nitrogen temperature. A typical diode of Toshiba 05Z18 has been found to be useful for measuring irradiation doses between 15.48 kC/kg (6×107R) and 2.58 MC/kg (1×1010R) with a fading less than 10% till 1000 hours after irradiation. This method of dosimetry has been applied to the measurement of the spatial distributions of γ rays inside a basket-type cobalt-60 source, and reasonable results have been obtained. It can be concluded from the present experiment that the radiationinduced change in the breakdown voltage of the zener diode offers a convenient and inexpensive method of radiation dosimetry.

In order to select most suitable activable tracers for investigation of groundwater flow (
70°C)
in an aquifer, loss of indium and dysprosium compounds (
nitrate and chelate)
by adsorption on rock, sampled from an underground aquifer at a depth of about 1000 m, was first examined by both batch and column methods.
Next, the groundwater flow in an aquifer was investigated by injecting 1 kg of Dy-
chelating complex salt (Dy-
DTPA)
and In-
DTPA as activable tracers into a reducing well at a distance of 112 m from a producing well. Dy-
DTPA and In-
DTPA of 0.9μg/l and 0.4μg/l at maximum concentrations, respectively, were detected in the groundwater when 11000m3 and 21000m3 waters were pumped up from the producing well.
Dy-
DTPA has proved to be a useful tracer for the investigation because of relatively small loss whereas a considerable fraction of In-
DTPA appears to be lost by adsorption or chemical decomposition.

Spiperone, a butyrophenone neuroleptic drug, has been used in binding studies of dopamine receptors.
Långström et al, developed N-
11C-
methyl spiperone, and, in cooperate with Wagner et al., made it possible to visualize the distribution of dopamine receptors in the human brain in vivo. In this paper, we independently developed another synthetic method of N-
11C-
methyl spiperone using the phase transfer catalyst in an anhydrous solvent.
Separation of the product is feasible only by passing the reactant solution through a Millipore filter and injecting it onto high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) .
The time required for the synthesis and purification of N-
11C-
methyl spiperone from 11C-
methyl iodide and spiperone was 20 min. Radiochemical yield exceeded 35% against 11C-
methyl iodide without correcting decay of the radioactivity.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical efficacy of liver SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) . The two examinations were performed in 76 cases with SOL (space occupying lesion) and 58 normal cases. The results of the image reading by the planar image only (PS) and that of the image reading by the combination of PS and SPECT (PS+SPECT) were analyzed by ROC (receiver operating characteristic) analysis. The ROC curves showed that SPECT appears to reduce the number of results which were equivocal by the image reading of PS only. The detectability of SPECT for SOL in the left lobe of liver was less than that of PS without statistical significance. However, the performance of SPECT for SOL in the right lobe of liver was significantly better than that of PS.

In order to obtain clear scintigrams of small animals, some improvements were brought on a pinhole collimator. Then, using a human gamma camera with this collimator improved, bone scintigraphy was attempted in the rat mandible and maxilla, experimentally to examine the desirable conditions of scintigraphy. The most desirable bone scan images were obtained under the conditions that the pinhole was 1.5 mm in diameter, the distance between the collimator and the object was 0 cm, and the exposure was 400.
