An improved ratio circuit for the position sensitive detector uses has been fabricated by applying the pulse sampling technique. The ratio magnitude of the input X and E signals has been converted to a square pulse of width τ (∝X/E), which is changed to the pulse amplitude to be analysed. The final E and X/E pulses of 2μs duration are simultaneously put out. The present X/E range is from 0.1 to 1.0 and its linearity is about 1%. The illustrative characteristics using 210Po-α, 241Am-α particles and accelerated protons are presented.
To determine the oxygen content in phosphorus, fast neutron activation analysis has been investigated. The optimum discriminator level for the measurement of gamma rays from 16N produced by (n, p) reaction was determined to be 4.0MeV. The effective absorption coefficient for red phosphorus was determined to be 0, 81. The calibration curve made with graphite powder containing glucose showed good linearity in the range of 0-50 mg oxygen. An empirical formula of this calibration curve was y=209.3 x+190.8, the slope of which showed the sensitivity of the determination. The determination limit of the proposed method was 200 ppm oxygen for red phosphorus. The precision expressed in terms of the coefficient of variation was 3.5-10.1% with the sample containing 1.21-19.91 mg of oxygen.
The rubidium nitrate was bombarded by 15MeV deuteron particles in the 160 cm-IPCR cyclotron. The bombarded rubidium nitrate was dissolved in a hydrochloric acid solution of pH3, and 10% cupferron solution was added. The 85Sr was extracted by shaking with TBP for 1 min. The extraction was repeated three times. The organic phase was washed with pH3 hydrochloric acid solution (2% cupferron) and then the carrier free 85Sr was back-extracted into pH3 hydrochloric acid solution. The recovery was about 95%. A carrier free 85Sr with sufficiently high radiochemical purity was obtained by this simple procedure.
This experiment was carried out in order to know the deposition and the distribution of CH3131I, 131I2 and Na131I on plant leaves such as spinach, Chinese cabbage, Komatsuna and camellia quantitatively and autoradiographically. CH3131I deposited on Chinese cabbage, spinach and camellia leaves on the similar level. On the contrary, 131I2 deposited strongly on spinach and Chinese cabbage leaves and slightly deposited on camellia leaves. It was suggested that 131I2 deposited more strongly on leafy vegetables than CH3131I. Both CH3131I and 131I2 were concentrated in the vein of the leaves. No radioactivity was detected on the leaves which were steeped in the Na131I solution. Effective removal of iodine-131 from the contaminated leaves was not clearly recognized by washing them with detergent, CCl4, ether, 0.5N HCl and 0.5N NaOH.
Res-O-Mat T3, a new diagnostic kit of thyroid function, was examined especially regarding the standard serum. Res-O-Mat T3 is based upon the same principle as the resin sponge kit. The major difference in the methods of this kit and the resin sponge kit lies in that, while in the latter method 131I-T3 bound to thyrobinding globulin is estimated directly by means of resin sponge, the fromer estimates the binding 131I-T3 remaining iii the test serum after free 131I-T3 in the serum is absorved by the resin strip and discarded. Although the 131I-T3 uptake of serum was affected largely by the time and temperature of incubation, the variations produced by different times and temperatures on the 131I-T3 uptakes of patient serum and standard serum were proportional to each other and a nearly constant value of the TBC index was obtained. Therefore, the various test conditions, e.g. incubation time and temperature, can be selected without worrying about their influence on the TBC index. The 131I-T3 uptake of serum was also dependent upon the serum volume, but the TBC index values were always constant, if the volume of standard and patient serum tested was strictly the same. The reproducibility of this kit by days was very satisfactory, that is SD: 0.027 and CV: 2.7% to 0, 986 average. The correlation coefficient for values obtained by Res-O-Mat T3 kit and the resin sponge kit was 0. 84, except for some cases observed especially in eu- and hypothyroid.
