  • PART VII. ON THE KINETIC THEORY OF DRAFTING SLIVER

    In this study the following expreiments were carried out. Fullness (ω0=1-ε0) effect on withdrawal force Fs of a single fiber from bundle (eq. 7.1), effect of withdrawal speed V (eq. 7.2), and relative velocity of stick-slip motion v-<v> (eq. 7.3) were observed in the cases of various fiber bundles.
    On the basis of these experimental results, the expression of capacity C (eq. 7.9), transportability pressure u (eq. 7.10), resistance R (eq. 7.11), and self conductance L (eq. 7.12) for the fibre current I (eq. 7.5) in the drafting zone were defined by Boltzmann's average equation (7.8).
    From these treatments, following results were obtained:
    (1) Time dependency of fiber currents I in drafting zone is given by equation (7.14) and (7.17)
    (2) Spectrum density GI(ω) and auto-correlation coefficient ρ(τ) of sliver irregularity were given in (7.15)_??_(7.19).
    (3) When L=0, the equation of fibre motion under drafting is reduced to the heat conduction or diffusion equation (7.21) and if L_??_0, to the damping wave equation (7.23).

  • (I) TESTING APPARATUS AND SAMPLE PREPARATION

    An improved method to measure the bulk compression behavior of fiber mass is studied.
    Compression experiments are carried out with Instron Tensile Tester equipped with apparatus designed and made in our laboratory which consists of a compression stand and a support table. By the aid of this apparatus the effective area of each sample mass is kept constant during a compression test.
    In order to secure the reproductibility of tests the method of sample preparation is investigated.

  • (XXXXI). RELATION BETWEEN CARROTTING AND FELTING

    M. Harris and his colaborators studied the shrinkage of wool top and they state that the larger the shrinkage the larger the resilience Rs. This result is opposite to author's result obtained on carroted fur (XXXX). The contradiction may be explained from the following relations, when the systine of a modified fur is non-broken the larger the relative work of the elongation Er the larger is the Rs, and when the systine is broken as the carroted fur the larger the Er the smaller is the Rs. Therefore, the relations between Er and Rs of the generally modified and carroted are opposite, but the relations between feltability and Er of both cases showed a same tendency. Therefore the physical property of the more generally connected to feltability is the Er rather than Rs.

    Various properties of acetylated cotton, which have been prepared by the method reported in our previous papers were examined in detail. Properties examined are as follows: tensile properties, water and moisture absorption, specific gravity, microscopic structure, thermal and electric properties, abrasion resistance, weathering resistance, resistance to acid, flammability, dyeability, shrinkage by water boiling, soiling and soil removal, etc.

  • (III) ON THE UNUSUAL BEHAVIORS IN DYEING OF VINYLON

    Further experiments on the unusual behaviors in dyeing of vinylon described in the previous papers were carried out. In the dyeing with a direct dye, Congo Red, the curve of dyeing rate in rayon has a well-defined equilibrium and the equilibrium value is decreasing with increased dyeing temperature. But vinylon shows unusual behaviors differing from the cellulosic fiber. In vinylon no distinct dyeing equilibrium is observed and the approximate equilibrium value increases with elevated temperature. On the other hand, in the dyeing with a disperse dye, Diacelliton Fast Brilliant Blue BF, vinylon shows a similar behavior to cellulose acetate and no unusual behavior is detected. Vinylon has a distinct dyeing equilibrium and the equilibrium value decreases with higher temperature.
    An explanation on the dyeing behaviors of vinylon would be that the acetal groups, which have affinity to disperse dye, are in the amorphous parts and are always accessible to the dye, but the hydroxyl groups are in the crystalline and the amorphous parts, and amounts of the hydroxyl groups accessible to direct dye vary by dyeing conditions.

    Various experiments have been made on α-chloroacrylate polymers for improvement in their heat stability and mechanical properties. A series of studies made by Marvel on α-halo acrylate polymer showed many facts that its structure is mostly of “head to tail” one (U. S. Patent 2, 379, 104., ) Using the marvel method the most suitable conditions for synthesizing Me α-chloroacrylate was sought.
    Copolymerization of α-chloroacrylate with vinylidene chloride are made and the monomer reactivity ratios are calculated. These values are found nearly equal to those calculated from the Q-e scheme.
