    Cyanoethylated amylopectins (CEAP) were synthesized with cyanoethylation of amylopectin (AP) using acrylonitrile in the presence of sodium hydroxide. The degree of cyanoethylation in CEAP was in the range from 0.80 to 2.41. Dielectric properties for AP and CEAP were measured at different frequencies and temperatures. Dielectric loss-frequency plots showed that the peaks of dielectric loss which were attributed to a side chain relaxation of cyanoethyl groups shifted to lower frequencies and higher temperature range as compared with those attributed to primary hydroxyl groups in AP. These side chain relaxations obeyed Cole-Cole's circular arc law and the Cole-Cole parameters, dielectric increment (εS) and distribution parameter (β) were determined. The values of εS for CEAP were larger than those for AP and the distribution of relaxation time broadened with decreasing temperature. From the frequency-temperature locations of loss factor maximum, the activation free energy, enthalpy and entropy changes for the side chain relaxations were determined. The value of the activation free energy in CEAP suggested that the orientation of cyanoethyl groups were somewhat more restricted as compared with that of hydroxyl groups.

    The poly(γ-methyl _??_-glutamate) (PMLG) membranes containing an oligo siloxane (SiG) and/or a trichloroethyl (TEG) groups in a side chain region were prepared, and their structure and gas transport properties were investigated. The secondary structure of the membranes used here was α-helix as well as a PMLG membrane. From the results of X-ray diffraction and density measurements, it can be said that the side chain regions of the membranes containing SiG and TEG became sparse and dense, respectively, compared with PMLG membrane. The solubilities of CO2 for the membranes containing SiG and TEG were low because of SiG having low solubility and the dense side chain region, respectively. On the other hand, the diffusion coefficient of CO2 for the membrane containing SiG whose mobility was high, increased with SiG content. For the membrane containing TEG, in contrast, the diffusion coefficient of CO2 was decreased by forming the dense side chain region. In comparison with PMLG, the permeabilities of CO2 for both the membranes containing SiG and TEG became low. This finding showed that low solubility of SiG mainly contributed to the permeability although the diffusion coefficient increased.

    A-B-Type block copolymer (MSi) membranes consisting of poly (γ-methyl L-glutamate) (PMLG, A component) and poly (dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS, B component) were prepared, and their structure and gas transport properties were investigated. From the results of IR and X-ray diffraction measurements, it was confirmed that phase separation of α-helical PMLG and PDMS components has occurred in MSi membranes, and at the interface between the two phases, random-coil structure was induced in the PMLG component. The random-coil in MSi membrane increased with PDMS content. The solubility of CO2 for MSi membranes decreased with increasing the content of PDMS, because of the low-solubility of PDMS and the dense structure of random-coil phase. The CO2 permeability coefficient (P) of MSi membrane increased with PDMS content, although the value of P was smaller than that of PMLG membrane owing to the random-coil phase.

    In order to discuss the catalysis observed in the odor-removing reaction catalyzed by octacarboxyphtha-locyaninatoiron(III) and -cobalt (II)_??_ Fe(III)- and Co (II)-ocpc_??_ fixed on the amorphous part-enriched rayon staple fibers, the oxidation of 2-mercaptoethanol (RSH) using these fibers was studied in an aqueous solution containing molecular oxygen at pH 7.0 and at 25°C. The catalytic activities of metal lophthalocyanines were determined by the measurement of the oxygen consumption during the reaction with a Warburg respirometer. The kinetics of the enzyme-like reaction was characterized in terms of a bisubstrate Michaelis-Menten's rate law. The rate constants of the rate-determining steps (turnover numbers) of 7.3 and 23.8 min-1 were obtained with the Fe(III)-and Co (II)-ocpc-fiber catalysts, respectively, and were lower than those of the unfixed metal complexes alone in solution. However, ΔH_??_ and ΔS_??_ values were approximately the same as those of the complexes alone suggesting that the oxidation mainly proceeded on the surface of the fibers. The catalysts fixed on the rayon staple fibers were more stable against radical species in the reaction solution than the unfixed catalysts, and could be repeatedly utilized as a catalyst for the aerobic oxidation of RSH.

    A novel method was developed to predict by computer graphic simulation how it looks when garments are worn by a human body. This could extensively simplify the process of dressing on graphics by introducing an effective and generally usable procedure by which each part of the garments is put right on the portion of the body to be covered by it. The method, based on two ideas, i.e., classifying garments into a few types and making the process independent of the posture of a human body model, could compensate for the weak point of a computer that, in contrast to human, it cannot judge by itself the kinds, right face, front or back, etc. of the clothing to be worn. The state of dressing in various posture was simulated for each type of garment, and the quality of it was estimated, the results of which showed that this method could successfully represent a garment form that fits well the model body for every type of clothing.

    The effects of weave on the luster of silk fabrics, noted particularly on the difference in them due to whether fabrics are white or dyed black, were investigated by visual evaluation and goniophotometry. Eight sample fabrics different in weave but the same in weave density as well as in yarn count were tested, the results of which revealed that the weave effect on luster was more outstanding for white fabrics than for black ones, both in visual valuation and in reflectometric one. Especially for the cases where the eight white samples were judged visually in the weft direction, the statistical analyses (of variance, correlation, and principal factors) of the obtained scores suggested that the eight kinds of weave might be grouped into four types that corresponded to four patterns of angular distributions of reflected light.

    Introduction of functional groups on the surface of polypropylene fibers by plazma treatments influenced the electret properties. It was found that the introduction of functional groups affected the surface potentials and charge retentions. Lowering of surface potentials was related to the decrease of trap sites, and the retention of charge was connected with the surface specific resistance of nowoven fabrics. Furthermore, It was discussed that the real state of trapsites is the defects on boundary of crystals, and that the introduction of functional groups affected the defects.
