The authors conducted bacteriological and pathological examinations upon 162 tuberculous lesions in 111 resected lungs at the Aichi National Sanatorium. Results are as follows:
1) There were smear-positive 62 lesions (38.2%) and culture positive 60 lesions (37.1%) among 162 lesions. Incidentally, there were no difference between the two, smear and culture examinations, in the finding of TB bacilli. Smear-positive with culture-negative lesions were 8% and they were almost non-cavity lesions.
2) As for cavities, their bacilli-positive occurrences were high, i. e., 70% of smear-positive and 78% of culture-positive. Meanwhile, in non-cavity lesions, the incidences were 22.1% and 18.7%, respectively.
3) In the bacilli positive sputum before surgical operation, their lesions showed 97% of bacilli positive results. On the contrary, in the bacilli negative sputum cases before surgical operation, their lesions showed 38.5% of TB bacilli presentation.
4) As for the effects of chemotherapy, remarkably many bacilli negative lesions were found from the cases which had been treated with chemotherapy for more than 6 months. The effects were especially remarkable in non-cavity cases.
5) Resistance of TB bacilli in the lesions was strong in the chemotherapy cases with longer continuance and remarkably strong in cavity cases. The resistance seemed stronger than in sputum.
