The present paper deals with follow up study on 546 pulmonary tuberculosis cases, discharged from the sanatorium as arrested or inactive, during the period from 1946 to 1954. The 546 cases are classified into 3 groups: work therapy group, 218 cases; walk therapy group, 138 cases and rest therapy group, 190 cases, by the time of discharge. Results are as follows:
1) No significant differences were found by group as to prognosis in case of minimal cases.
2) In cases with cavities by x-ray examination, their prognosis were not good even in the work therapy group.
3) Cases treated by thoracoplasty showed better prognosis than that of pneumothorax or of rest therapy. Additional work therapy did not show difference in this category.
4) Rate of worse prognosis was higher (27.1%) in cases of positive TB bacilli in sputa culture than in cases of negative cases (14, 3%).
5) Rate of worse prognosis of the total cases by 10 years was 21.9%, including 4.4% of fatal cases. No significant differences were found by group, and by sex.
6) The worse prognosis included 66.7% of worse x-ray picture, 4.4% of increase of positive bacilli and 13.3% of worse subjective symptoms.
7) No significant differences were found by occupation of post-discharge period.
8) Rate of re-employment was high (91.4%) in the work group and that of other groups was 76.0%.
