Background: The information about Japanese cedar pollinosis (JCP) from the Internet is growing these days. We examined the effects of the pollen information on people who have JCP. Methods: We conducted web research from 2003 to 2006 between February Ith and April 30th on a pharmaceutical company's website. Results: On a gender basis, women tended to seek information about JCP more than men did. Furthermore, women consulted a doctor when the amount of pollen was large, while men didn't. People who made wide use of the pollen information had a behavioral tendency to seek consultation and performed many kinds of self-care for their own disease. Conclusion: The information for JCP using the website has enormous effects on people's lives. We should give more meaningful information and patients should take more as well.

A 39-year-old man consulted our hospital because of severe constrict pain at the sternal area and heavy sensation in chest. His chest pain improved with procaterol hydrochloride, he was diagnosed as having chest pain variant asthma. His symptoms improved with corticosteroid and cysteinyl leukotriene antagonist. Not so many articles have been reported that concerned with this disease. There is a need for a better dissemination of knowledge about this disease.

We present a case of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) caused by allergic reactions to shiniseihaito. An 84-year-old woman showed acute interstitial pneumonia followed by ARDS after taking shiniseihaito for the treatment of rhinitis. The ARDS were markedly improved with corticosteroid therapy. This case was diagnosed as being induced by shiniseihaito because it was compatible with 4 of 5 of Camus's criteria. The stimulation index of the drug lymphocyte stimulation test with shiniseihaito increased after corticosteroid therapy had been tapered and suggested that the mechanism of acute interstitial pneumonia in this case was allergic reaction induced by shiniseihaito. This is the seventh reported case of drug induced lung injury by shiniseihaito. We recommend careful observation when this medicine is prescribed.
