    Many problems remain to be approached in the ball-game teaching both in scientific research and teaching per se. This may due to, for instance, the facts that the ball-game contains quite complicated structure, very difficulty to analize into common fact as easily, and difficulty of forsee the level of achievement in teaching compared with other sports. Amongst these reasons, its historical background seems most influencial of all, that is, the fact that it long relied upon the teaching methods of that traditional gymnastics, because which it could not get out of this yoke in order to review and create new principles for the improvement. It is, however, a hopeful trend that many research colleagues began thinking and discussing on so-called "Movement Specifity" regarding the teaching, and the author would like to introduce his own theory on the teaching in this article originated in his teaching experiences for a long time which purported to theorize those experiences.

    The training effect for aerobic work capacity was investigated in eight healthy women at ages of 34 to 50 years through ten weeks of training by 10 minutes bicyle pedaling every other day. The 80 percent of the pretraining maximal oxygen intake was loaded in dividually as training work intensity. As a result, the mean maximal bicycling time at a given constant load increased 234% at the end of training period. The mean maximal oxygen intake increased from 1.3 to 1.6 l/min (20%) or 25.4 to 30.1 ml/kg/min (19%) by training. The cardio-respiratory variables were shown by increased pulmonary ventilation from 50 to 61 l/min (22%) and oxygen pulse from 7.2 to 9.2 ml/beat (22%) while maximal heart rate did not change. The mechanical efficiency was improved. Therefore, the training work intensity corresponding to 80% of Vo_2max before training induced the improvement of aerobic work capacity on the middleaged women.

    The functional mechanisms of the shoulder and shoulder girdle were studied anatomically and electromyographically while the body length was shortened or lengthened at the shoulder without any angle change in the sagittal plane. Electromyograms were recorded with a 13 channels electroencephalograph using surface electrodes, 10mm in diameter. Recording sensitivity: 6mm/0.5mV. The recordings obtained were examined from the anatomical view of the X-ray pictures of the various chinning postures. The results obtained can be summarized as follows. 1) The postural change from the lengthened chinning to the shortened one, that is, the elevation of the sternoclavicular joint was resulted from that the clavicle was lifted up with the fulcrum of the acromioclavicular joint. This resulted in that the scapula was slightly rotated downward, and the shoulder joint was slightly pushed out. 2) Lifting up of the sternoclavicular joint resulted in 8cm shortening of the full length of the chinning posture, about 4.9% of the body length. The postural change from the most lengthened chinning to the most shortened one increased about 40.9 degrees of the angle between the longitudinal axis of the clavicle and the spinal column, about 8.0 degrees of the angle between the spine of the scapula and the spinal column, and about 4.3 degrees of the angle between the spine of scapula and the longitudinal axis of the humerus. 3) The postural change from the lengthened chinning to the shortened one resulted in gradual increase of the discharge of the abdominal pectoralis major, the latissimus dorsi and the lower trapezius, in which the lines of muscle pull run effectively to support the body weight from the anatomical view point. The increase of the discharge of the lower trapezius was most remarkable. 4) The most lengthened posture was kept with only the discharge of the middle deltoid, and without the discharge of the abdominal pectoralis major, the anterior and the posterior deltoid, the infraspinatus, the teres major, and the upper trapezius, even when the body weight was added by 30Kg of weight and the recording sensitivity was increased two folds.

    Electromyograms were recorded during elevation of the lower extremity in the various vertical planes, from 11 muscles participating in the movements. The recordings obtained were examined in terms of the functional mechanism of the muscles. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1) The anterior portion of the gluteus medius acts as an elevator at any vertical planes except only initial part of the movement in the sagittal plane. 2) The posterior portion of the gluteus medius acts as an elevator in the vertical planes between 60 degree and 150 degree lateral from the sagittal plane. When the movement was performed against the disturbing force including a slight lateralward horizontal component, the discharge was observed in the vertical plane from 0 degree up to 180 degree. Conversely, when the movement was performed against the medialward disturbing force, the discharge was observed from 90 degree up to 135 degree lateral from the sagittal plane. 3) The sartorius and the rectus femoris act as elevators between the sagittal plane and the frontal plane. Since they have a component of adduction as they were elevated in the vertical planes between 30 and 90 degree lateral from the sagittal plane, the increase in the discharge was observed when the movement performed against the lateralward disturbing force rather than that against medialward. 4) The adductor longus participates for elevation of the thigh in the vertical planes between the sagittal and 60 degree lateral vertical plane. 5) The tensor fasciae latae actively participates for elevation of the thigh in any vertical plane up to 120 degree lateral vertical plane. 6) The discharges of the gracilis were not observed in any vertical plane. 7) The semimembranosus and the biceps femoris participate for the thigh elevation in any vertical plane beyond 105 degree and 150 degree lateral from the sagittal plane respectively. Since the muscles have a component of adduction in the movement, the increase of the discharge was observed when the movement was performed against the lateralward disturbing force. 8) The adductor magnus acts as an elevator in any vertical plane beyond 135 degree lateral vertical plane.

    Although it is a well known fact that the heart volume is a key factor of stroke volume, cardiac output and maximal oxygen intake, the available data are not sufficient for further discussion on basic training of endurance. Work was given to the subjects on a bicycle ergometer with the load progressively increasing up to nearly maximal level. The subjects all males, were ordinary healthy 33 adults and trained 33 middle and long distance runners. Cardiac volume was determined by a simplified Rohrer-Kahlstorf method. To determine the cardiac output, CO_2 method was used. To determine the pulmonary diffusing capacity, Filley's steady state method was used. For oxygen intake, Douglas bag method was adopted with Scholander's apparatus. The results were as follows : (1) The heart volume at standing posture was observed to be 648.1 and 835.1 ml. in ordinary and trained subjects, respectively. (2) In ordinary subjects, a close relationship was found between the heart volume and the maximal oxygen intake, the maximal pulmonary diffusing capacity, the maximal cardiac output and the maximal stroke vilume with a correlation coefficient of r=0.443, r=0.274, r=0.572, r=0.535 in the same order. (3) The regression equations for these relationships were as follows : Y^^^=0.002X+1.33 (Y^^^=max Vo_2, X=H. V.) Y^^^=0.027X+26.22 (Y^^^=max Dlo_2, X=H. V.) Y^^^=0.015X+11.84 (Y^^^=max Q, X=H. V.) Y^^^=0.092X+59.86 (Y^^^=max S.V., X=H. V.) (4) The H.V. of the athletes had significantly high correlations to maxVo_2, maxDLo_2, max Q, max S.V. with the coefficient of r=0.668, r=0.449, r=0.680, r=0.670 respectively. (5) The regression equations for these relationships were as follows : Y^^^=0.0027X+1.14 (Y=max Vo_2, X=H. V.) Y^^^=0.045X+ 16.04 (Y=max Dlo_2, X=H. V.) Y^^^=0.015X+13.73 (Y=max Q, X=H. V.)     The purpose of this study was to clarify the changes that may occur during the course,in the attitudes of college students toward physical education activities and to find out the factors contributing to them. In the initial (April) and final (July) periods of the first semester in 1972, Kobayashi Physical Education Attitude Inventory was administered to 821 of freshmen and sophomores in Kyushu University. The results were as follows : 1. The freshmen showed more favorable attitudes toward physical education activities than the sophomores in the initial test. 2. The attitudes of students were different depending on each course of the physical activities in the initial test. Therefore, it was felt that the attitudes of students were different depending on the preference of sports events. 3. Both the freshmen and the sophomores showed significant changes in their attitudes toword physical education by taking courses. Especially, the sophomores who scored lower points in the initial test than the freshmen showed more remarkable changes in the attitudes. 4. It was recognized that even with in the same scholastic year and physical activity course, students showed different changes in the attitudes depending on the class to which they belonged and one of the factors of these changes were influenced by the contents of skill instruction.
