    Shin Kobe railway station on the Sanyo Shinkan Sen (New Sanyo Line) is situated at the south piedmont of the Mt. Rokko and underlied by active fault named Suwayama fault.
    Then the elevated railway structures are underlied three different beds such as granite rock, fault clay and alluvial sand and gravels.
    So, the special considerations were carried out for the design of the structures with regard to the effects of differential movements of the ground due to active faulting, uneven subgrade reaction under the basement structures, and heaving pressure due to swelling of the fault clay.

    Recently in the civil engineering field, the survey using Handy-Seismograph is getting to popularize connecting with actual works. There are 10 or more kinds of Handy-Seismograph apparatus which have already developed at in and out of Japan. It is a special merit that these any apparatus can be operated by only a few person (one-three), and are more simple, small size and light weight type as compared with the normal one. The survey by such handy type is named “Shallow Refraction Method” and as the name, it makes to better economy for near surface investigation. And so, it will be a new type of survey technique which holds extensive utilizing sphere, looking at the points of its simplification, movability, original measurement system and so on. Moreover, it will play a part in bringing about understanding among the engineers in field of survey, planning and construction, since whenever, anywhere, anyone can use it.
    This paper is described as regards the characteristic of apparatus, effectual measurement system, expectant utilization, examples of survey and economical feature, summerizing what writers have experienced heretofore.

    The relations between the quality of groundwater and strata of the the three great Diluvial teraces at the easternside of the Hlkkaido Districts is here reported. Their results can be summarized as follows.
    (1) The chracter of volcanic origin deposits is indicated in the quality of all groundwater in the studied area, as shown in the key diagram (3) division.
    (2) The better quality of groundwater is shown in the higher terrace.
    (3) The groundwater of II (Kunneppu) Terrace has both the quality of groundwater of I (Oribe) and III (Memanbetsu) Terrace.
    (4) The quality of groundwater has relation to the hight of terrace, the distance from shore to terrace and related strata.

    利尻島は本邦北端の火山島で, 面積1.83km2あり, 島の中央には標高1, 718mの利尻岳がそびえ, それをとりまいて山麓には熔岩台地と扇状地とが広がつている。火山の基盤は新第三系で, これは島の東北隅にわずかに露出するにすぎない。そして, 地表水系がみられるのも島の東北麓に限られる。そのほかの全域では, 天水は熔岩もしくは扇状地堆積物中へ浸透して地下深くに貯えられ, 海岸付近において地上もしくは海底へ湧出している。
    沿岸地帯では, 地下にガイベン・ヘルツベルグの淡塩水均衡面があり, この面の谷と湧水ルートとは密接な関係にあることが考えられる。この点に着目して筆者らは, 島の西海岸において比抵抗法による均衡面探査を行ない, みいだされた谷線上でボーリングを実施して, 優秀な地下水脈の開発に成功した。
