    Experiments were made to determine whether a cell culture method wouldbe suited for evaluating anticoccidial drugs in vitro. Eleven anticoccidial drugs with ananticoccidial effect proved in vivo were used. They were five thiamine antagonists, twoquinoJones, one pyridone, one sulfonamide and two antibiotics. Chick embryo and kidneycell cultures were prepared for each experiment. It was proved that all the drugs exertedanticoccidial activities in vitro, as they did in vivo. The optical conditions for the activi-ties varied with the type of drug.The effects of antibiotics could be evaluated in terms of inhibition of the penetration ofsporozoites into the cultured cells. The effects of the quinolones and pyridone could beassessed in terms of inhibition of the development of schizonts beyond the intracellularsporozoites. It was necessary to administer the thiamine antagonists and sulfonamide con-tinually after inoculation with sporozoites. A quinolone-resistant strain of Eimeria tenellawas not affected by the quinolones in a concentration in which these drugs had been provedactive on susceptible strains.

    Feline panleukopenia (FPL) virus was isolated on direct monolayer culturefrom the spleen of a cat which had manifested the symptoms of FPL. It formed intra-nucleaf inclusions in cat kidney cell cultures, whereas no definite cytopathogenic effect wasobserved on these cultures.The virus showed a resistance to ether, chloroform, sodium deoxycholate, and pH 3.0.It was not inactivated completely after heating at 80C for 30 minutes. Viral replicationwas inhibited by 5-iodo-2-deoxyuridine. The virus passed through a membrane filter 25 nmin pc)re size. No significant hemagglutination of the virus was observed with the erythro-cyte of guinea pig, rat, rabbit, cat, chicken, sheep, calf or horse, but the virus hemagglu-tinated swine erythrocytes under an appropriate condition. The virus was neutralized onlyby FPL-immune serum among 16 kinds of immune sera against feline viruses. A survey onthe serological evidence of the virus in healthy cats indicated that 50% of the kittens 0 to3 weeks old and all the adult cats examined had neutralizing antibody titers of 1:1024 orover, and that all the 18 kittens 4 to 24 weeks old surveyed had titers of less than l:16.

    One hundred and twenty-eight fowls of various breeds were dissected topresent diagrammatically the distribution of the pancreatic ducts in relation to the lobulaLion and the variation of the sites at which the ducts penetrate the serous surface of theduodenum.Some kinds of colored radiopaque fluids for radiography and color photography wereinjected into the three pancreatic ducts respectively to elucidate the pattern of distributionof the ducts (Figs. 26, 27).The pancreas of the fowl consists of three main lobes, Lobus dorsalis (Ld), Lobusventralis (Lv) and Lobus lienalis pancreatis (Lip). Each of the dorsal and ventral lobes issubdivided into two parts, Pars dorsalis (Pd) and Pars ventralis (Pv), by an incision towhich the Ligamentum pancreaticoduodenale terminates (Figs. 1 -4).The three pancreatic ducts, Ductus pancreaticus dorsalis (Dpd), Ductus pancreaticusventralis (Dpv) and Ductus pancreaticus accessorius (Dpa), were demonstrated constantly inall the cases, except one (Figs. 5, 6).Considerable variations were observed on the distribution of ducts in the parenchyma(Figs. 7-18) and on the terminations of ducts on the serous surface of the duodenum(Figs. 19 -25). They were grouped into three types. The correlations between the typesand the breeds used are shown in Tables 1 and 2..Three pancreatic ducts entered the duodenum at a site close by two bite ducts. Theyopened into a common papilla, Papilla duodeni communis (Fig. 28).The nomenclature Of the lobes and dUCtS glV(611 111 lmterature and that pTOpOsed by theauthors are summarized in Tables 3 and 4.

    011 CNBGT medium and modified FM medium, many strains were isolatedfrom the feces of five mice and eight rabbits, and were identified according to the Manualsof Prevot and Beerens.1) In mouse feces, 10, 10" cells of Bacteroides and 10 cells of Sphaerophorus werefound per gram. The former were more predominant than the latter.2) In rabbit feces, 10, .10 cells of Bacteroides and 10, 10 cells of Sphaerophorus werefound per gram. The former were more predominant than the latter.

    The turnover rate of potassium in the rat with special reference to age ofthe animal was investigated by means of tracer study and balance study. Tracer studyrevealed that the older animals laave a longer biological half-life and higher body retentionfor intraperitoneally dosed "K than the younger animals, Balance study was done bydetermining the body burden and daily intake of stable potassium for rats of various agesby using atomic absorption spectrometry. The turnover rate of potassium was calculatedfrom these data on the assumption that the body is practically a single compartment forpotassium kinetics. For the calculation the changes of body burden and daily intake ofpotassium versus age were expressed by a Gompertz function and a exponential function, respectively. The result was nearly the same as that of tracer study. The age trend ofthese results are in good agreement with those obtained for radiocesium in the previousinvestigations. It is therefore reasonably assumed that the turnover rate of radiocesium isclosely related to that of potassium.

    Effects of natural estrogen and synthetic nonsteroidal estrogens on the finestructure of the anterior pituitary cells of the male mouse were studied. As estrogeniccompounds, estradiol-17 p, hexestrol, and two hexestrol difatty acid esters (hexestroldicaproate and hexestrol dicaprylate) were used. Seven days after injection with a singledose of 100, pg per adult male mouse, the hexestrol difatty acid esters induced strikingmorphological alterations in the gonadotrophic cells, including LTII cells. LTH cells werehypertrophied drastically and LIT cells relatively, while FSH cells exhibited. an atrophicappearance.In order to confirm the suppressive effect of the estrogens on FSH cells, male mice wereorchidectomized and then injected with the same dose of each estrogen. This treatmentcompletely suppressed postcastration changes in FSH cells. This also resulted in an exag-geration of estrogen-induced LTII cell hypertrophy. Alterations induced by estradiol-17 jawere similar to but milder than those in the case of the hexestrol difatty acid esters, although hexestrol exerted no morphological effects.

    An experiment was conducted with 38 piglets to clarify relationships ofhepatic xanthine oxidase and plasma ferroxidase to storage iron mobilization. In conjunc-tion with the result of hypotransferremia, hepatic xanthine oxidase and plasma ferroxidasewere extremely low at birth. Accordingly, it seems likely that due to these enzymatic andprotein deficits, the rate of iron storage cells to plasma iron transfer may be quite limited, if at all. When there were sudden increases in plasma transferrin, ferroxidase activity andhepatic xanthine oxidase after piglets had utilized colostrum, a corresponding increase iniron release from the liver was observed. It is possible that the ferrous to ferric cycles inthe liver and plasma are activated by the increase in iron-releasing enzymes and plasmatransferrin, and that thereafter the rate of transport of iron from storage cell to erythro-poietic organ is accelerated still more.Eventually, as a result of storage iron depletion, plasma iron and hemoglobin levelsdecreased and overt iron deficiency appeared markedly from 3 days of age onward.. Milkferroxidase and transferrin showed a high level at farrowing and decreased progressivelyto 10 days postpartum. Although plasma ferroxidase increased intensively after pigletshad absorbed colostrum, the amount of colostral ferroxidase absorbed by piglets was verysmall, as compared with that derived from endogenous sources after the cessation of theabsorption of colostral protein by the piglets.

    A total of 73 cases of proventricular ulcer in swine were investigated his-tologically, as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopically.Histologically, a parakeratosis-like change, acute erosion, and subacute and chronic ulcerwere differentiated in the lesional classification of each case.Scanning electron microscopic observation revealed an initial parakeratosis-like changeand subsequent erosion and ulcer in the same case.When examined by the transmission electron microscope, the parakeratosis-like changewas the atypical keratinization of the stratum corneum.Pathogenetically, the above-mentioned parakeratosis-like change and erosive and ulcerouslesions might have been induced by different factors.
