A new technique named “Transoral Oblique Method” is recommended by the authors for the radiographic examination of salivary calculi in submaxillar glands.
The procedure of this method is as follows:
1. The patient is laid down on the ill-side, keeping the mouth open.
2. The cassette is placed just under the submaxillar region.
3. Finally, the X-ray exposure is made so as to fit the central axis in the eye-tooth of the opposite side and to point at the submaxillar gland of the ill-side.
By means of this mehtod salivary calculi were discovered in seven consecutive cases, all of which were operated on and the calculi were found in Wharton's duct in 5 cases and in submaxillar gland in 2 cases.
In this method, the shadow of the stone, even in smaller concretion is found out clearly always independently of that of the bone of the lower jaw. So the transoral oblique method is considered to be the most useful and accurate method.
