Eight patients with far-advanced head and neck cancer were treated with combined cisplatin and peplomycin chemotherapy. 75mgs of cisplatin was administered intravenously on the 1st day, followed by 10mgs of peplomycin on the 2nd to 7th day. Complete response was obtained in 3 cases, and a partial response in 4 cases, with an overall response rate of 87.5%. Side effects such as nausea and vomitting (62.5%), anorexia (62.5%), depilation (50%), facial edema (12.5%) and leucopenia (12.5%) appeared in evey case. However, all of these were slight in grade and temporary. In conclusion, combined therapy using cisplatin and peplomycin was considered to be of use in far-advanced cases of head and neck cancer. In addition, of of this therapy was also suggested for the combined use with radiation and for the prophylactic use following major surgery.
