    That masks are regularly worn is one et the chief charcteristics of the Noh. But as to the reason why they were devised there goes round a traditional fallacy-that they are employed to keep back the actor's emotional mood, corresponding to the general spirit of the Noh.
    I maintain an opposite view. In my opinion, human faces are not so expressive as they are usually believed to be. For even the most skilled actors can show only a few kinds 01 expression in their faces: Sometimes it is impossible for us to detect any difference between their smiling faces and tearful ones. To our great inconvenience, we have each one face only, and so a certain actor can not take the part of Falstaff, though he may boast of his Hamlet. To make up for the inconvenience of faces the Noh mask was invented, by which we may be sure to remove the limit of race, sex, and age.
    If the Noh mask has any defect it must be the impossibility of moving the eyes and lips.
    But we have a compensation for that, that is vacantlooking eyes and half-opened lips. If an actor wishes to gaze at something on the stage he needs only to give , his mask a little motion to impress us with an idea that the eyes are staring fixedly at, that Very thing. And the half-opened lips are so dexterously contrived that, when the mask is faced downwards, the lips may seem to be shut and when faced upwards to be opened amiably.
    This invention came from the necessity of applying one mask to every case, and the art of Noh mask carving was completed when it reached this invention which I call the non-expressionism of the Noh mask, because it seems very plain when the special motions are not given to it.
    We find such non-expressionism in almost all types of masks representing young women (Zoh, Ko-omotc, Shakumi, Fukai, etc.) and those representing young men (Kantan-otoko, Sumlyoshi-otoko, Chujoh , Ima-waka, Dohji,fidoh, Kasshiki, Herta, etc,). However there are other types of Noll masks-God masks (Tobide, Tenjin, Mikazuki, etc.), and Demon masks (Beshimi, Shikami, Shishi-guchi, Hannya, fa, etc.). These are, generally speaking, imitation of the ancient Gigaku masks and and Bugaku masks, in which we can trace the influence of the masks of the Western Regions, especially Babylonia and Assyria. These imitation masks represent each a momentary and exaggerated emotion and are invented to give superhuman dignity and terror to the expression. They can scarcely be called genenuin Japanese masks. In short, when the Noh mask thought of its long-forgotten purpose, it gave up an attempt to make itself a chef d'oeuvre and was contented itself with its lot as a theatrical medium, whence its essential beauty developed.

    Problems of this investigation:-
    (1) Which, if any, of the simple colours are preferred by the aged.
    (2) Whether the preferences vary according to sex and age.
    (3) Whether any differences of a constant nature exist between the preferred colours of the aged and those of children and adults.
    Methods and Procedures:-
    The colours used were Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue and Violet. The subjects were IIO males and IOO females in number, covering from sixty to ninety in age. In the firstp lace the observers were asked to compare two simple colours and choose the one which is prettier showed in pair, for example red and orange, yellow and green etc.(there were 15 pairs). When this was done, they were asked to pick out the colour that they liked the best among six colours, then the next best one, third, fourth and so on.
    Results and Conclusions:-
    We could not find any apparent difference in the results get by the both methods above mentioned.
    (1) The order of preference is as follows: Blue, Violet, Green, Red, Yellow and Orange. Blue clearly takes the first place, Orange occupies the lowest. In this regard there are no characteristic features of the aged compared with the results of children and adults.
    (2) There finds scarcely any differences between male and female preferences, and this seems to show some important facts in old age.
    (3) There is almost no regular changes in preferences related to age, but only Red appears to increase the attractiveness as the subjects rise in age.
    (4)(a) Blue always stands on the first place in preference in both sexes.
    (b) Red occupies the fourth in general, but the variability of choice for it is very great. -Some observers place it in head, others at bottom.
    (c) Orange and Yellow usually take the position at the bottom of the order.
    (d) Violet and Green are always placed in the middle of the order.

    Sous la sensation de chatouillement, on entend les deux états de conscience de différentes natures. L'un est provoqué par chatouillement du sujet lui-même, l'autre est senti par chatouillement de l'autre homme, l'autre sujet. Ces deux sortes des états de conscience sent tiès distinctes. La sensation par le sujet lui-même est, ressemblant beaucoup à celle de la four-millement, mélange de la sensation de contact et de douleur faible. La sensation de dèuxiemee sorte est provoquée généralement par la sensation précédante, et implique, par conséquent, la qualité de celle-ci, mais elle contient d'ailleurs le facteur trés complexe et fort inexplimable qu'il convient de conmmer le sentiment de “thrilling,” le sentiment de tressaillement. A mon avis, ce facteur non-sensorier est la vraie nature de chatouillement. Aussi la sensation de chatouillement n'est pas la sensation au sens rigoureux. Ce sentiment, ce facteur non-sen soriel, est apporté à. la conscience par l'existence et l'action d'un autre homme. Si noire sujet n'était pas conscient a l'existence d'un autre sujet, il n'èprouverait que la sensation de première sorte. j'appelle, selon la nomenclature de Tarde, cette deuxieme sorte de sensation la sensation de chatoullement interspirituelle, et celle de la premiére sorte la sensation de chatouillement intra-spirituelle. Ainsi la sensation de chatouillement de deuxième sorte appartient, avec te sentiment de comique et de colere, aux faits de psychologie inter-mentale.
