Salmonella miyazaki (Sm) was first isolated in Miyazaki city, in 1955 from food poisoning patients and further in 1966 from a patient with dysentery-like symptoms. Except for these occasions, no isolation has been heard yet both in this country and abroad.
In these cases at that time, neither the tracing of the infectious route nor the detection of the carriers was successful. Then, the species of carrier, if they are animals, has remained unknown.
This report describes the establishment of the carrier animal through the trailing of sewage system of the city.
The summary is as follows:
The authors, while engaging the investigation of salmonellae distribution in sewage system, have recovered Sm from many spots in one of trunk lines since July 1970. After trailing upstream for Sm, we at last reached three branch lines of ditches locating at the mid slope of a hill north of the city, and spreading up to about 400 m²-wide areas scattered with houses.
Judging from this fairly wide spreading of contaminated areas, animals with relatively wide haunting range were suspected as the culprits, among which the dog was in this circumstance most suspicious.
Then, the dog feces on the roads of these areas was examined for Sm, and from one of lumps of the dung tested, the germ was recovered.
Experimentally orally given 10 mg of Sm to a dog caused no symptoms other than anorexia and a bout of soft stools on the second day of the germ administration. The germs were detectable in the feces up to the 15th day.
The length of the germ excretion period was shorter than anticipated, but it is believable that the propagation of Sm must have taken place in the intestinal tracts of the dog.
From above results, it can be stated that the dog is, first of all, established as the carrier animal for Sm.
