The medical package has renewed to save medicine performances. But existing medical materials have issues, for example, normal PVC includes di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and DEHP leaches into the medicine1,2), and PVC adsorbs some chemicals3,4). Our ZelasTM MP series showed low chemical adsorption, which has the potential to replace PVC. Not only PVC replacement, ZelasTM TPS has potential to replace Butyl rubber for closure. Moreover, Mitsubishi Chemical corp. launched ZelasTM CP, which showed low protein adsorption and has potential to replace glass for vials.

In contemporary medicine, numerous medical rubber products play an important role. These products must possess safety and performance characteristics appropriate for their intended use, necessitating adherence to rigorous standards. This article aims to provide a concise summary of the latest standards governing medical rubber products, specifically focusing on rubber closures. We will explore the crucial aspects of biological safety, chemical safety, performance requirements, and physical properties associated with rubber closures, shedding light on the essential considerations required for the development and implementation of safe and effective medical devices.

Styrenic elastomer (SEBS) is a block polymer made by hydrogenation of styrene-butadiene copolymer (SBS), which is obtained by living anionic polymerization of styrene and butadiene monomers. It is known to exhibit high flexibility, rubber elasticity, and mechanical properties due to the micro-layered structure of the hard segment polystyrene portion and the soft segment butadiene portion. SEBS is used as a modifier to add flexibility and impact strength to various plastics because its physical properties and compatibility with other resins can be finetuned by controlling the amount of styrene and the reactivity of the 1,2 and 1,4 bonds in the butadiene. Especially, SEBS has excellent compatibility with PP, and is widely used in medical applications that require hygienic properties because it provides flexibility and impact resistance without the use of plasticizers. In this report, we describe the application of SEBS to infusion bag films and tubing for IV sets.
