The rubber products degrade during use by various factors such as oxygen, ozone, heat, light and dynamic fatigue. Degradation factors are various depending on the conditions of use, and there are a lot of degradation factors besides the above-mentioned. The reagents that are added to prevent degradation are called antioxidants. Degradation causes the phenomena such as physical properties degradation, hardening, softening and cracking, and then rubber products cannot maintain the function of the products. To prevent degradation by these various factors and to maintain the product-life cycle for a long term, addition of antioxidants is very important.

The manufacturing processes of the rubber products are complicated, and the importance of processing aids improving the processability is increased. The function of the processing aids, fatty acid derivatives, is mainly based on lubricity. It would be affected by a kind of rubber and/or ingredients. This text explains the function and the usage of the processing aids in the order of the rubber processes. In addition, it introduces new processing aids that bring about other function than lubrication.

Carbon black is applied for many products, especially in rubber industries. Its physical and chemical structure is summarized in this paper. The influence of the carbon black properties, especially surface area and structure, on the mixing and the rubber properties is described for the NR and SBR formulation. In addition, the examples of the contributions from the aggregate size distribution and hydrogen contents to the rubber reinforcements are given.

It is well known that carbon black has superior reinforcement effects on physical properties of vulcanizates. Inorganic fillers, such as silica, kaolin clay, and calcium carbonate, exhibit similar effects on physical properties of vulcanizates by surface treatment with silane coupling agents and addition of modified polymers. The properties of inorganic fillers and its surface treatment for development of high-performance and high-functional vulcanizates are reviewed in this paper.

Silane coupling agent (CA), as an additive for rubber, plays an important role in the silica-filled rubber. In the case of the application to tire tread rubber, CA improves physical properties, not only rolling resistance but also wet grip properties. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) is used as an activator for the vulcanization of rubber containing white carbon, such as silica, by serving as a masking agent for silanol. On the other hand, bis(triethoxysilylpropyl) tetrasulfide forms chemical bonding between rubber and silica, which gives better rubber properties than PEG. However, rubber properties, such as viscosity, cure speed, physical properties, etc., are changed with kneading temperature and other additives that affect the reaction between CA and silica. Hence, controlling this reaction is very important in silica-filled rubber systems.
In this article, the effects of chemical structure of CA, kneading temperature and addition procedure of other additives on rubber properties are reported. In addition, novel CAs are introduced.
