    This paper is described on outline of 1985 THE 36th TAPPI COATING CONFERENCE. 1985 TAPPI COATING CONFERENCE was held at The Atlanta Hilton, Atlanta, Georgia in May 19-23, 1985.
    The address theme of conference is “Productivity and Quality for Tomorrow.” Technical sessions were covered coating pigments, basestock, binders and additives as well as coated process.
    The contents of each sessions are as follows,

    It is estimated about 1000 persons participated to conference from USA, Canada, Sweden Germany and all over the world.

    Development of a new filler for paper which exhibits specific function has been expected in accordance with the trend of paper base weight reduction. A white filler derived urea resin appears on the stage as one of organic fillers. The filler is composed of porous agglomerates (average diameter ca. 5μ) comprizing from non porous spheres (average diameter 0.1-0.3μ).
    Agglomerates have void space of 2 cm3/g and the average void size of 0.3-0.5μ. The filler having particle size and structure explained above affords high level of light scattering (whiteness and hiding power) and absorption (opacity after printing).

    In paper manufacturing, there is a demand for on-line measurement of the color of paper sheet. This report describes the principles (spectrophotometers with a prism or grating and multi-element detector array are generally used to measure color), some different approaches, and relevant standards. The report also describes special considerations required for on-line measurement.

    A general method for evaluating complex curl shapes of paper has been proposed, and underlying geometrical significance and the determination method have been examined in detail.
    Various curl shapes which paper exhibits in its end use, such as cylindrical curl and diagonal curl, are fully described in terms of three curvature components, i.e., k1 bending curvature in CD, k2 bending curvature in MD, and k3 twisting curvature. By using these curvatures, an apparent curl shape observed from an arbitrary direction can be predicted and characteristic quantities of curved surface including the orientation of curl axis (principal direction) and principal curvatures can be calculated with Eqs. (3) and (4).
    The curvatures k1 and k2 were measured in cross machine and machine direction for a narrow strip of paper, and the twisting curvature k3 was determined from k1, k2, and k (45), curvature in the direction of 45 degrees to MD, by use of Eq. (6) which was derived from curvature transformation equations.
    It was demonstrated that an apparent curl shape is not always same as a latent curl shape which is predicted from measured curvature values for a narrow paper strip, because of geometrical and mechanical stability of curl shape. Rational evaluation of curl shapes presented in this paper gave us detailed information on heredity effects of curl behavior and CD curl profile in paper machine.

    Characteristics of thermal decomposition of flax pulp, various wood pulps and handsheets from flax pulp blended with wood pulps were investigated by thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC).
    An endothermic tendency of flax and wood pulps was shown in the same temperature range in helium, but an exothermic tendency was shown in the lower temperature range compared to the case of wood pulps in air. Assuming the first-order reaction for thermal degradation, the activation energy was calculated from TG by Freeman's theory.
    Thermal degradation of pulps is classified into two types which are composed from two or three reaction stages both in air and helium atmosphere. Flax pulp can be classified into the former group (three reaction stages), and its activation energy was nearly same as that of softwood pulps in the lower temperature range. TG-DSC curves of handsheet from flax pulp blended with wood pulps had the similar tendencies to that of flax pulp both in air and helium.

    The bast fibers of paper mulberry (Kozo Broussonetia Kazinoki SIEB. and Kazinoki : B. papyritera VENT.) were subjected to the chemical analysis and pulping test by means of ammonium oxalate solution cooking comparing with those by the conventional caustic soda cooking. The extractive contents (water, 1 % NaOH and alcohol-benzene) in six varieties of bast fibers are generally higher than those in woody materials, as well as the content of ash (Table 1). The large quantities of pectin material are also characteristic of the bast fibers while very few content of lignin are observed.
    The ratio of pectin/lignin content reached at around 6.1 in average of six samples tested (Table 2). The pulping yields by ammonium oxalate cooking were always higher than those by caustic soda cooking at similar chemical concentration of cooking liquor (Fig. 1). The strengths of pulp obtained by ammonium oxalate cooking were also remarkably higher than those obtained by caustic soda cooking (Fig. 3 & 4). The results of cooking test on temperature in ammonium oxalate solution show that the highest strength of pulp is given at 85°C (Fig. 6 & 7). The relation between the pulping yield and the strength of pulp indicates the beneficial effect of ammonium oxalate as the pulping agent for paper mulberry bast fibers (Fig. 8).
    Thus, it is suggested that the removal of pectin material located mainly in interfiber zone of bast fibers is so effectively done by the ammonium oxalate solution under neutral or weak acidic condition (Fig. 1), that the defiberizing to individual fiber will be easily done with few damage of fiber structure.
