    Solaronics IRT, located in Lille in France, is a leading company in the field of non-contact drying technology. Solaronics IRT is a specialist of Gas Infrared Dryer and Electric Infrared Dryer, and have developed and supplied UNIDRYER which is combination of Gas Infrared technology and Air Floata-tion technogy.
    UNIDRYER has air floatation nozzles right after Gas Infrared Emitter Modules, having very high evaporation rate up to 231 kg/m2 hr and very high energy efficiency in the range of 65% by utilizing a part of exhaust air from Gas Infrared Emitter Modules, containing very high energy. This is a ideal drying equipment which can dry 100% of coating color applied onto the web without temperature increase of the web and can minimize building space required for many zones of conventional air dryers.

    Spooner is based in the North of England and was founded 70 years ago holding all the original patents in forced convection drying. Since then Spooner has been the Industry leader in drying, developing the MG Hood, the Air Turn and many more. Air Flotation dryers for materials from porous nonwovens to metals and many more including the Module Dryer which today's talk is based on.
    Spooner has in house design and manufacturing supported by a comprehensive Research and development used not only to develop new technology but customer products and coating. Today we will start with the heart of the Spooner Technology, the Spooner Nozzle, the HPC or High Performance Compact Dryer, the newly developed Re-Circulating Air Turn leading into the Module Dryer, the trials, performance and its effect on quality and mottle.

    Some surface finishing methods such as electroplating, thermal spraying and ion plating have been investigated for long life of coater blades. Innovative developed chromium plating had superior property of wear resistance to those of above methods. Moreover, it was found that plating profile was very important for applying to various types coater and work condition of actual use.

    Coated Paper needs have been wide and rich in variety in Japan. That is why the paper coating process and operation became more severe on quality and productivity.
    In B/M 9000 CS-our newest QCS products introduced in 1998-, we have provided solutions for it, which are three methods to measure Coat Weight and applications for quality control of cross direction and machine direction. Precise measurement of Coat Weight profile and cross direction control, for instance, can reduce product rejection and extend lifetime of coater blade. These technologies are major contributor to produce results in product needs of quality and throughput.

    Productivity and quality demands increasingly force the coated paper maker to seek innovative solutions to improve CD caliper and gloss profiles and enhance MD gloss levels while at the same time maintaining or increasing calender speeds. Gloss grades are manufactured utilizing a number of forms of soft-nip calenders including Supercalenders and single or multiple nip gloss calenders. These operations can be on-or off-line and increasingly depend on heated rolls to achieve high gloss levels.
    This paper will review the use of a zone controlled external induction energy source, Calcoil, as a means to correct CD caliper and gloss profiles as well as providing energy to enhance the hard roll surface temperature to allow increased gloss levels while maintaining or increasing calender speed. Predicting the results that can be obtained on any calender configuration requires a good thermal model of the process and typical results from these studies will be reviewed.

    In coater machines, defects with characteristics that are different from the defects that occur in paper machines occur.
    Omron developed streak inspection system in 1985 before other WIS manufacturers, which was mainly to detect the faults occurred in coater machines. It was a product that answered customers' requirement in quality and with new algorithms to detect faults that any WIS on those days could not detect. Streak inspection system has been renewed in 2001 as the series of development of new WIS, NASP. NASP has an ability to detect not only spot defects but also streak.
    It also has capability that not only for off-line coater machines but also for on-line coater machines. We are now introducing the latest NASP with streak inspection capability.

    At Shiraoi Mill of Daishowa Paper Mf. Co., Ltd., No. 32 off-coater machine started up in May 1996. No. 32 coater equips four coating heads, which enable to produce high quality A 2 grade coated paper, with capacity of about 600 t/d and design speed of 1, 100 m/min. It was a first experience for us to operate four heads coater, with the state of art technology.
    Runnability and productivity of this coater machine has been significantly improved, while its quality, specifically printability, has kept satisfying customers.I introduce the equipment and the operating experience of No. 32 coater machine in this paper.

    The # 3 coating machine at Kasugai Mill, Oji Paper Co., Ltd. is a wide and high speed coating machine, started production in February 1990. It has 5, 600 mm of the coating width, 1, 500 m/min of the design web speed, and 600 metric tons per day of the production capacity.The main feature of the apparatus is four coating heads providing double coating for each side of paper in response to marketing needs for high grade coated paper. The outline and the operating experience of the apparatus are summarized in this article.

    JAPAN TAPPI Patent Committee has put in operation the service activities of the patent information about Pulp & Paper technology since a long time ago. The active contents are the establishment of original patent classification, the classification of the abstracts of the patent gazette, the offer of classified abstracts of the patent gazette, planning and holding the patent seminar, and other enlightenment activities and so on. These aim of activities are the offer of useful technology information for engineers of Pulp & Paper industry. In annual conference in this time, JAPAN TAPPI Patent Committee sets up a booth in the exhibition hall, and introduce an easy searching method for patent information to make use of the Industrial Property Digital Library of Japanese Patent Office's homepage.

    In order to provide and share the technical information among Japanese pulp and paper industries. Pulping Technical Committee surveyed chemical recovery process operation in kraft mills of '99 fiscal year (Apr.'99 to Mar.'00), following the survey of kraft fiberline operations of '98. We received the answers from 33 mills, except one mill, out of 34 domestic kraft mills.
    This report summarizes result of the above investigation, concerning operational conditions and equipment of chemical recovery process which covers black liquor evaporator, recovery boiler, recausticizing and lime calcining.

    Hardwood bleached kraft pulp (HBKP) handsheets were recycled with heat treatment as a model of paper recycling. The apparent density and the tensile index decreased from 0.67 to 0.51 g/cm3 and 46.3 to 12.9 Nm/g, respectively, after they were recycled for four times. Decrease in fines content and hornification of fibers with recycling, which were related to the reduction in total bonding strength of recycled handsheets, were investigated as possibly influential factors on this behavior. A possibility of strengthening role of fines by covering fiber surfaces including filling peripheral regions of interfiber crossings was presented by confocal laser-scanning microscopy (CLSM). The CLSM micrographs of cross-sections of HBKP fibers evidently showed hornification effect on re-swelling in the wet state, which strongly affected their conformability during wet web forming, in each cycle of handsheets recycling. Recycled fibers showed inferior re-swelling capability and conformability, i.e. they could not provide sufficient interfiber contacts in recycled handsheets, as in CLSM micrographs clearly demonstrated. Because no decrease in fines content was noticeable by handsheets recycling, the increase in un-bonded areas of recycled handsheets is suggested to rely on the reduction in re-swelling capability or conformability of rewetted recycled fibers. The decrease in strength of recycled handsheets was also certainly attributed to the increase in un-bonded areas of interfiber crossings by CLSM.

    A retention control system trial was performed for the wet part of a papermaking machine. By introducing two intelligent pulp and ash (filler) low consistency sensors (Kajaani : RM-200 M) to the stock supply line of head box and the white water (WW) filtrate line of wire part, we can monitor its wet end process conditions continuously. The retention control system using these sensors stabilizes the wet part process by controlling WW consistency, that is by an appropriate action of the retention aid dosage using a gap added PI (Proportional plus Integral) controller. As many grades production is running and grade changes are run frequently in this paper machine, it is difficult to determine the target set value (SV) of WW consistency. So we developed a new algorithm to judge the process stability by itself and to determine the SV target value of WW consistency automatically.
