If we use the general expression, Year 2000 problem is that a computer can't process the data which have a date after 2000 properly. In different expression, this is the ill effect which happened because the computer programmer had processed of year on the program by two digits for a long time.
Though this paper writing moment it became within 365 days by year 2000, the domestic enterprises which have already started a countermeasure are more than 70%, and we heard that the enterprises which have completed a countermeasure are about 20%. We think that not only the cost of the countermeasure, but also the time limit of delivery of the countermeasure software, and arrangement for the personnel become problems from now on.
Though Pulp and Paper companies are advancing a countermeasure for this problem there are some differences in progress. We have paid attention to Year 2000 problem of the control system all the time and we have advanced investigation. In this document we explain about Year 2000 problem of the control system, then We report about the problem that will happen in the factory of the Pulp and Paper companies, and the countermeasure. And the other day we asked to the Pulp and Paper companies for the questionnaire related to this problem. Now we report the result of the questionnaire too.

For years, the instrumentation in process industries including Pulp and Paper industry has been standardized with so called Distributed Control System (DCS). CDS was first introduced in mid 70's with distributed digital process controller, CRT-based Human Interface and a digital communication. It also introduced a well-designed engineering package to mimic the conventional analog instrumentation. After several generations, the DCS is now dynamically moving toward the completely new system architecture with open network, open software, new software technology, control technology and engineering technology. At the same time, traditional instrumentation engineers needs to prepare to respond to the new control system objectives and new technologies, methodology. This paper summarized the new trend in control system and discusses on changing demands to the instrumentation engineers.

It is known that fiber orientation is related to runnability of paper web, curling of paper, dimensional stability and so on. For producing paper with proper fiber orientation it is important to measure and control it in the papermaking process.
We developed the on-line sensor system to measure fiber orientation on paper surface and succeeded in measuring fiber orientation of paper running on paper machine.

Impact's Advantage PlUSTM process management system has received good reputation from many customers in the paper industry since 1991. The scanner platform utilized the industry's most advanced scanning technology, and it is designed specifically for the varying temperature and severe environment of the paper machine. It supports Impact's real unique digital sensors, and provides accurate and reliable measurement of multiple process variables.
The system has extremely simple configuration and versatile open architecture concept. In this paper, I would like to introduce Impact's sensors and the principle of the operation. In addition, latest advanced software for operating system is described.

One of the greatest challenges faced by the papermaker is controlling and reducing product variations at their source, namely the wet-end. It has been extremely difficult, if not impossible, to date because of the lack of adequate sensors to measure process and product changes right on the wire. Honeywell-Measurex's new FullWebTM Advanced Systems Technology (FAST) and SpectraFoilTM sensor go a long way in addressing these concerns. Using a unique, non-scanning measurement technology, the SpectraFoil sensor can detect both product variation and process changes, reliably and virtually instantaneously. Specially developed FAST control applications put the measurement data to use to provide paper makers with significant economic and quality benefits.

Pulp and paper industry is a capital intensive industry where a small saving in process inputs or an increase in operating efficiencies will leverage into a considerable positive cash flow to the bottom line. The realized profitability and higher product quality achieved by automation have increased automation level in the pulp and paper industry.
The objectives of the new generation paper machine concept are improved utilization degree, availability, quality as well as the development of production methods that offer savings for the environment and raw materials. The production speed will exceed 2, 000 meters per minute. The properties of the new generation paper machine are achievable by taking advantage of automation and machine synergies. By investing in the intelligence added to the machine, automation is raised to a completely new dimensions. The future paper machine can really be called the Intelligent Paper Machine.

Yokogawa has released its new QCS, “B/M 9000 CS” in May 1998. This document introduces this QCS with new concept mainly focusing on the development concept. B/M 9000 CS was developed in line with ETS (Enterprise Technology Solutions), Yokogawa's business administration principle, and it is the ETS core product for the Paper Manufacturing Industry.
We understand that requirements for the QCS today and future, are as follows.
    · Quality management of the paper, with increasing production speed, increasing number of grades, and increasing quality requirement.
    · Complying with ecological issues.
    · Reducing the life cycle cost.
    · Contribution to production management and business administration.
The key technologies of B/M 9000 CS for corresponding to these requirements, are explained in this document
The latest technology used for generating 1, 200 point high-accuracy and high-density profile, is introduced in the measurement technology portion. Then, new operating and supervising environment based on Windows-NT, is introduced in the human interface technology portion. The new Profile Control Display, which is designed for comfortable operation of up to 500 zones of CD actuators, is also introduced in this portion. Next, Auto-tuning Function and On-line Adaptive Control Function are introduced in the control technology portion. These two Functions maintain the ideal control conditions to keep the minimum life cycle cost. Finally high-performance system communication bus and open data interface, the core technologies of this system, are introduced in the system technology portion. Furthermore, continuous development themes for the future QCS, are also introduced.

Scanning Probe Microscope (SPM), that is, Atomic Force Microscope equipped with a detection system for various mechanical features was applied to observe separated domains of SB-latex and starch in their blend film based on the different levels of “hardness” between the two binder regions. This method has a merit that there is no need to stain SB-latex with Osmium or Bromide, and starch with Iodine. Besides, it permits us to observe samples at very high inplane resolutions and in atmospheric circumstances. Empirically, the elastic modulus image of SPM showed small particles 0.2 μm in diameter that seem to be uncoalesced latex particles on a surface. But, those particles were hardly seen in the topographic image presumably because the particles are buried in the film with the coalescence interface shape mostly maintained. The phase mode image in the tapping mode revealed stripes running at 1.5 gm intervals, which are likely to correspond to domains of the two binders. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed that the stripes are due to the alternate separated domains. Thus, SPM, when applied to coated paper, has a feasibility to assess SB-latex and starch distributions in coatings.
