    In the 5th report the recent technical trends of SB Latex were summarized. In this report I would like to introduce modified starches, one of the primary materials used for making coated papers. The modified starches are also used as cost-cutting adhesives as well as viscosity adjusters and water retention agents.
    Brief description relating to various kinds of modified starches are given, and auto-continuous starch conversion system that are installed at some of the paper mills in the United States are introduced along with insolubilizers for the starch.
    Also, I took this opportunity to present the recent trends of calcined clays and plastic pigments that are continuously improved and developed as new pigments.

    Today in Japan, it has now become a national requirement to improve and enrich the life of the people rather than put emphasis on high economic growth.
    Though new biotechnology is now in the age of take-off yet, it will drastically transform the character of our future society.
    Throughout past 30 years, Japanese compaines accumulated their own technologies especially in the field of fermentation industry.
    On their past achievement, Japaniese companies are now eager to introduce new biotechnology in many industries.
    In this report, I would like to introduce the general aspect of present status of research and development regarding new biotechnology chiefly in Japan.
    At the same time, I would like to express my opinion about the future development of this new technology.

    13 Cr martensitic stainless steel, cast by Centrifugal process, is used for Suction Roll Shell in Paper Machine. But recently, the material made by Forging process, also comes on the stage.
    This paper is reported on the mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, corrosion fatigue, notch sensitivity on fatigue and so on with comparison between each process.
    It was concluded that the corrosion fatigue and notch sensitivity depended on manufacturing process

    The Moisture Profiler is desighned to eliminate the moisture variations that accur across the width of the sheet and raise the “average” moisture content of the paper by applying high intensity infrared radiation depending upon the localized need.
    The results are : Up to an 80% improvement in moisture spread and a 10% increase in machine speed-with savings in fiber and energy costs. Typical payback is less than six months.

    Toho Straw Pulp Co., Ltd. was established in 1937 at Mamada, Tochigi-ken, to produce paper pulp from wheat straw.
    The mill has been making efforts to improve pulp quality so as to be blended in special grade paper, and now become only one non-woody pulp maker in Japan. The capacity of the mill is 395 T/M of those pulps such as rice straw pulp, abaca pulp, chinese kenaf pulp, cotton pulp, salago pulp etc.
    These pulps are produced in three lines respectively :
    rice straw pulp line (short fiber line)
    abaca pulp line (long fiber line)
    cotton pulp line (heavy beating line)
    The mill site area is 39, 400 sq. m and the number of employees is about 50.

    Computer simulation was done for stress-strain behavior of a sheet taking into account its actual basis weight variation profile. The input data for basis weight were taken from four kinds of handmade sheets whose settling time in their papermaking process were chosen as 10, 30, 60 and 110 sec, respectively. The numerical results indicated that the average basis weight in a set of the elements in the width direction primarily governed the elongational behavior of the specimens ; in other words, the average stress of all the elements in a certain crosswise row was inversely proportional to the average basis weight in the row. Among the rows of elements whose average basis weight was comparable, the mechanical behavior of the individual elements could be explained roughly by the concept : (1) whether the element was located outermost in a specimen, and (2) whether basis weight of elements located on either side of the element was higher or lower than average. Thicker parts and thinner parts compensated for each other. As a result, stress generated in the elements changed smoothly along the width direction in the specimens, even if their basis weight varied drastically and randomly. This behavior finally resulted in there being almost no difference in stress-strain behavior between samples having different degrees of formation. The results of computer simulation reflected well the actual behavior of the sheets.

    Coated papers are required to have excellent visual smoothness as well as printing smoothness. The experimental means for measuring the visual smoothness has not been proposed. In this study, a new instrument has been designed to evaluate the visual smoothness of coated papers. The instrument is constructed with illuminator, microdensitometer, Fourier Transition analyser and personal computer. This technique is based on the measurement of reflectance variation. The viewing angle is 0° from the normal to the surface and the incident angle is 85°. The reflectance variation signal is transferred to power-spectrum by Fourier Transition analyser. The summation of power-spectral density from wavelength 1.3 to 2.0 mm is named “Smoothness Index”. A good corelation between Smoothness Index and visual smoothness of coated papers was observed. Using this technique, it has also been possible to study the effects of coating process variables on visual smoothness.

    Studies were carried out on bleaching of bagasse PAP with Hydrogen Peroxide-Alkaline (Pa) solution. The Pa solution was a mixture of water, hydrogen peroxide (0.5-5% on od. PAP), sodium hydroxide (as Na2O 0.5-5% on od. PAP), and small quantities of auxiliaries (DTPA), the liquor ratio of the mixture to PAP being 10 l/kg.
    Pa treatment made unbleached pulp (UPAP 81-21, Hunter brightness 51.8% kappa no. 7.2) into higher brightness and slightly lower kappa no. pulps (Hunter brightness 68.9%. kappa no. 4.8). Especially suitable quantity of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2 1-3% on od. PAP) was effective for bleaching. Pa Pa two stage treatment gave semibleached pulp (Hunter brightness 72.0%, kappa no. 4.9) without chlorine. PaH and PaD two stage sequences with small quantities of hypochlorite and chlorine dioxide (as available Cl2 3%, and ClO2 3% on od. PAP respectively) gave high brightness bleached pulps.
