    This review article introduces some new methods to determine the structural parameters of paper sheets by the application of image analysis techniques. The major subjects are:(1) what kind of information can be obtained from the parallel- and cross-sectional images of pulp sheets, (2) structural analysis of filler loaded papers and the relationship between structure and sheet properties, and (3) some methods to evaluate the mass density distribution and fiber orientation distribution from soft X-ray radiograms of paper sheets.

    In this country, brightness determination has been made according to JIS P 8123, using Hunter reflectometer since the year of 1954. On the other hand, standardization of the measurement using geometric diffusing reflectometer (Elrepho, as an example) is the tendency in the leading countries of the world today. Purpose of this report is to describe the differences between these two methods ana as the conclusion, to suggest the application of the latter in our country as well.

    13Cr stainless steel pipe can be manufactured by forging and centrifugal casting. Recently, it has been reported that 13Cr stainless steel made by centrifugal casting showed better properties in corrosion resistance and corrosion fatigue strength and notch sensitivity than forged material.
    This paper shows the evidence of main couse of suction roll breakage made by centrifugal casting. Breakage occured by means of stress concentration at casting defect like as large scale of inclusion or cavity.
    The corrosion resistance of materials can be controlled by considering alloy elements, but no corrosion pits were observed in cast material broken to act the fatigue breakage.
    Forged material has good mechanical properties, therefore forgings are getting trust to use for important machine part.

    Quality requirement of paper depend on its end use. Major use of wood-containing printing paper is for magazines, school textbooks, notebooks and other books. Use of wood-containing paper for advertising insert is incresing recently. Sensory evaluation on 7 wood-containing papers in the market was carried out. Based on the answers from large number of panelists, paper quality for various end use and correlation between sensory evaluation and physical test are discussed. Whiteness of paper is just opposit to opaqueness, thus the whiter the paper, the worse the opaqueness. Formation did not correlated with thickness, but with two-sidedness and smoothness.
    Three major factors for the paper quality evaluation were confirmed to be surface, mechanical and optical properties. It was also became clear that the suitable paper for magazines and books were the kind of paper which was white, but less opaque, and had smooth texture. On the other hand, textbooks and notebooks required the paper with opaque, slightly yellowish color and less smooth surface.

    The relationship between filler distribution in cross section and paper properties was investigated for different filler loaded papers. The results are summarized as follows.
    (1) The change in sheet density with increasing filler content differs with typ
    (2) A good correlation between light scattering coefficient of paper and [2r/(1-r)] np was obtained, regardless of filler type. Since [2r/(1-r)] np was derived from refractive index and from the particle size of dispersed filler aggregates in water, this result shows that these two parameters have strong influence on optical properties of paper.
    (3) Internal bond strength of paper tends to decrease, as the z-directional width of filler aggregates increases. This tendency is consistent with that of sheet density.

    Some effects associated with recovery of bleachery effluent to chemical recovery process were investigated. In oxidation process, little effect was observed on oxidation of sodium sulfide and methyl mercaptan by pH decrease of black liquor. But sulfide oxidation was slightly accelerated by some organics in bleachery effluent at low concentration of sodium sulfide. In evaporation process, the release of hydrogen sulfide was affected by the mixing of bleachery effluent, but release of methyl mercaptan was independent. Slight increase of black liquor viscosity during evaporation and precipitation from black liquor were observed by recovery of bleachery effluent. These changes depended on pH decrease or organics contained in bleachery effluent. But swelling volume of black liquor changed little. From these results, it seemed to be feasible to recover the neutralized bleachery effluent with alkali to chemical recovery process.

    Principle of separation or classification with hydrocyclone is to make use of difference in settling volocity under centrifugal force among particles. It has been shown that Centri-Cleaner 600 is elective for the separation of vessel elements from wood fibers of various BKPs. This paper deals with experimental study of settling velocity of various pulp fibers, vessel elements and model particles. The results were used to explain mechanism of separation with hydrocyclone.
    With the model particles of vessel element, it was comfirmed that particles with large projected area and small L/D ratio (length to width ratio) settled faster in water. And the settling velocity of model vessel element was a function of its apparent density and thickness. The settling velocity of fiber, on the other hand, was proportional only to a diameter and apparent density of fiber.
    Effect of pulp consistency on vessel separation was also examined in terms of space available for vessel element to fall through the network of pulp fibers. The extremely low separation efficiency of vessel elements with high L/D ratio could be explained by the space availability.
