    The topics of conductive papers and their electromagnetic shielding effectiveness have been reviewed briefly. To evaluate the potential shielding effectiveness of conductive fillers, such as stainless steel fiber, glass and synthetic fibers which are electrolessly plated with nickel and copper, conductive papers were made by using their fillers with wood and synthetic pulp as raw materials. Effect of the characteristics of these fillers on electric properties of papers was examined. The conductivity, aspect ratio, filler concentration and the degree of conductive filler bonding by each other, which lead to high efficiency for shielding effectiveness of papers were described in detail.

    RAPPT (Research Association of Pulp and Paper Technology) initiated its R&D works in Sept., 1982 under the financial subsidy from the Ministry of international Trade and industry and finished in March 1987 with fruitful result on schedule.
    This paper gives you the outline of high consistency forming (HCF), one of the main themes of RAPPT.
    HCF project had been conducted by 16 researchers dispatched from 5 paper makers and 4 plant makers and they were divided into 5 groups to work for the following ;
    A : Fundamental research of fluid bahaviour of pulp suspension and evaluation of physical properties, printability coating-capability of HCF sample sheet.
    B : Search for the screen in the approach flow of HCF.
    C : Research on the sheet forming.
    -1 : Quick-sheet forming.
    -2 : Fiber dispersion and jet stability of the HCF head box.
    -3 : Fiber dispersion in the sheet forming zone.
    Assembling all the idea of the researchers, a pilot plant, available for various types of sheet forming test, was built in Oct., 1985.
    As for the sheet formation, printability and coating-capability, HCF sample sheet formed on the pilotplant could be evaluated as good as the conventionally formed one. However, the tensile strength, both of the machine and cross directions reduced gradually with the increasing consistency in the head box, whereas the Z-direction strength increased.

    In part I, the elastic modulus and drying force are measured as functions of a web moisture.
    Though drying is a continuous process, it can be divided in to several stages like ten stages. Stage i covers drying from a web moisture W (i) to W (i + 1). The web deformation at stage i is calculated by the finite element method using the elastic modulus of a web moisture W (i) and stress force generated by the drying from a web moisture W (i) to W (i+ 1). Then, the deformations, which are shrinkages in this case, are accumulated to give a shrinkage profile as a web becomes dry.
    The simulation model was developed using the above concept, and verified by comparing the actual shrinkages at fine paper machines in a mill with the result by the simulation.
    Then, a probable moisture variation in a cross direction at each drying stage was assumed, which had been the result of previous papers. The simulation was carried out, and followings were obtained.
    1. If some center part of a web has more moisture (0.05 g water/g fiber) than the rest as a cross direction profile at the later part of a dryer section, the former part of a web shows the shrinkage of 3.6 percent in a cross direction, which is 0.4 percent less than that of the rest part, after dried up.
    2. With the same condition, the center part gives less shrinkage in a machine direction than the rest part by the difference of 0.1 percent after drying.
    3. These differences seem to be large enough to cause dimensional unstability by atmospher changes.
    The same procedure may be used to analyze a dry web behavoir when subjected to humid conditions.

    It has been pointed out that one of important factors to increase separation efficiency of vessel elements in pulp by hydrocyclone is to reduce the amount of short pass flow around the vortex finder at the top of hydrocyclone. Measurement of retention time of fluid and the amount of short pass flow has been carried out using techniques of electrolyte tracer method and flow visualization.
    With an increase in length of vortex finder the amount of short pass flow decreased to some extent. But if it is too long, it disturbs internal flow pattern. The optimum length of vortex finder is 50 mm for the hydrocyclone used in this experiment, and the amount of short pass flow for this case is about 5% of feed flow. Virtually no effect was observed with the change in under flow tube diameter. Vortex finder of bell bottom shape “SKIRT” did not reduce the amount of short pass flow.

    Removing methods of inorganic impurities in white liquor produced by Direct Causticizing process were investigated. inorganic impurities (Al2O3, SiO2 etc.) contained in several kind of iron ores has no adverse effect on causticizing reaction.
    Al2O3 removing effect by addition of magnesium compounds (MgO, Mg (OH) 2, Dolomite etc.) by a factor of 0.05-10 of stoichiometry was experimented.
    Material balance of inorganic impurities (Al, K, Cl, Mg, Mn etc.) in white liquor and iron ore was estimated. Impurities content of AP white liquor after Al removing with addition of MgO, white liquor relief to other process (ex. NaOH extraction in bleaching) and iron are purge is almost equivalent to that of KP white liquor.
