Our UV fixable thermal papers containing the encapsulated diazonium salts, coupling agents, organic bases and thermosensitizers have high thermo-sensitivity compatible with G3 facsimile equipment, and excellent shelf life. The polymer microcapsule has a good isolating function at ordinary temperatures and good material permeability at high temperatures. The image, after UV fixing, has good resistance to various chemicals, and no forming of heat-induced images.

In the drying sections of high-speed paper machines, the single-run system is applied for the purpose of mainly preventing sheet-fluttering.
We developed better heat-transferable dryer-fabrics in this system for more efficient drying of sheet web.
Our special dryer-fabrics mentioned above for which some metalic fibers we partially used, has higher heat capacity and much improved heat-transferablity from drying cylinders to sheet web, compared with the conventional dryer-fabrics.
We herewith report on the effects in the laboratory testing and in the actual applications of heat-transferable dryer-fabrics.

The F-Sensor uses a laser beam to monitor the sheet formation, using the principle of optical transparency. It mounts in a fixed position on the edge of the sheet and gives an indication of formation, and therefore, the performance of those machine parameters which effect it. A remote electronic module located up to 100 m (330 ft.) from the sensing head, provides an on-line numerical indication of the formation, on a numeric display and chart recorder.

On Oct. 1216, 1987, TAPPI'S PAPERMAKER'S WEEK was held at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis Tenn. It featured two Seminars on Wetend chemistry : “Introduction” and “Advanced Topics” in Wetend chemistry Seminar. This paper is a summary of these seminars. The curriculum of these seminars were wide touched and well edited. In this curriculum I was impressed by the recent paper industries' strong necessity or the deep interests on wetend chemistry.

The higher the stock consistency is, generally, the worse the sheet formation is.
The high consistency sheet forming technology consisting of three core devices, hereafter explained, has been developed to achieve the better sheet formation even on the high stock consistency.
    1) Headbox with three dimensional twisted plates for longitudinal and cross-sectional direction.
    2) Quick-set sheet forming device which prevents fiber from reflocking and accelates dispersion between headbox and wire parts.
    3) Forming roll which is installed close to the quick-set forming device promotes not only the early stage drainage at the wire part but also adjusts the bulk which tends to be high in case of HCF. We also call this roll High Quality roll.
Reviewing the quality of the sheet samples produced by new technology, our evaluation is as follows.
    1) The combination of three dimensional headbox, quick-set sheet forming device and HQ roll is accepted as HCF. Especially one of quick-set sheet forming devices, 2 drum type device consisting of two suction breast rolls is to be applied to not only sheet of high basis weight but also that of board.
    2) The range of jet wire ratio to make a sheet of good formation is wider on HCF than on LCF (conventional low consistency forming).
    3) The retention of fiber and ash on this system in HCF is better than in LCF.
All these tests were carried out with furnish of LBKP, further R & D is necessarily to apply these technology for other furnish.

Elastic deformation of semichemical medium in the corrugated fiberboard under the surface compression was determined, and the deformation characteristic and strength efficiency Ef (strength per mass of the corrugated sheet) was disscussed by that determination.
The maximum stress appear at tops and bottoms (position attached to the liner) of the corrugated medium, and the absolute value σmax of the stress decreases by the increase of thickness T of the medium, the minimum of σmax appears according to the variation of length l and height h of corrugation. Also, the optimal conditions of Ef is obtained by the choice of values T, l and h.

Beechwood and birchwood as hardwoods were subjected to solvolysis pulping using cresols and water (CW) (7 : 3 or 1 : 1 by volume) including small amounts of acetic acid (A). When beechwood chips were cooked with CW (7 : 3) including 10% of A (based on chips) for 3 hr at 170°C, the chips produced pulps with the highest selectivity of delignification and with the satisfactroy strength properties. If they were cooked with CW (1 : 1) systems, the selectivity of delignification was decreased. Birchwood was delignified more readily than beechwood. Under almost the same cooking conditions as those for beechwood (using 2 hr of the cooking time instead of 3 hr), birchwood chips produced pulps with the good strength properties. Therefore, a much improved delignification of hardwoods was found to be achieved with CW (7 : 3) including 10% of A for 2-3 hr at 170°C.
Polysaccharidic products (CWPS) and solvolysis lignin (CWL) were obtained by fractional precipitation from the spent liqour. The results obtained from the analysis of sugar composition for CWPS showed that CWPS consisted of 10% of xylose and 90% of xyloligomers for the xylose residue. CWL was separated into a high molecular weight fraction (CWL-1) and a low molecular weight fraction (CWL-2). CWL-1 and CWL-2 were characterized with respect to elemental composition, contents of functional groups and oxidation products. The results indicated that CWL-1 contained most of the original lignin structure intact, but it contained 9-13% of condensed cresols. CWL-2 was found to have 20-30% of condensed cresols and to be modified stringly. CWL may be utilized more effectively as constituents for phenolic resins, because it has the higher content of phenolic hydroxyl groups than that for commercial lignins.
