As one of the organic wastewater treatment system, the conventional aerobic wastewater treatment system used widely so far has been being replaced gradually by an anaerobic wastewater treatment system. The anaerobic wastewater treatment system requires no oxygen and reduces waste sludge production. It also drastically cuts down the running cost of a wastewater treatment system when generated methane gas is used. In the BIOSAVER-MC, a new anaerobic wastewater treatment system, the reactor is charged with fine particles as expanded bed media to hold highly active and dense granular sludge at high biomass concentration, thus permitting operation in reactor with more than ten times the space loading of the activated sludge system. The BIOSAVER-MC has been put into wide and practical use for treating wastewater from soft drink bottling plants, brewers' yeast processing plants, suger refineries, and other food processing industries. For pulp and paper industries, a pilot study on the BIOSAVER-MC for treating an evaporater-condensate in a kraft pulp mill was conduted, where the COD loading was 23 kg-COD/m
3/day and stable treatment was made possible.
