    Objective evaluation of printed matter was studied briskly early in the 1980's. At a simultaneous period, (Formerly) Kanzaki Paper Co., Ltd. ((Currently) Oji Paper Co., Ltd.) worked on the research of numerical evaluation concerned with printed matter and developed the inspection device of missing dots for photogravure printing. Afterwards we developed the inspection device of offset printed matter, sheet formation, paper dirt and deinking sheet etc. then these accumulated technology achieved the special purpose machine APQS (Automated Print Quality Evaluation System) based on our domestic image processing analysis system “Dot Analyzer DA-6000”. In this report, we introduce details until developing, outline and algorithms concerned with APQS.

    The relating work of the Winding Machine is dependant on manual operation. This is especially true on every take-up. This procedure requires manual labor. The take-up entails taping roll tails, along with the necessary paper work. Since the required work must be completed when exchanging the unreel role within duty time, reducing staff is inappropriate at this time.
    Therefore, they aimed at saving labor by the automation of the core supply work, the increase in efficiency of the work to improve the big burden of labors.
    Meisan Trading Co., Ltd. started realization design of the development of the core automatic supply device by the technological guidance of the Nippon paper Industries Co., Ltd.
    They piled up improvement, and reached all the present automation devices since the prototype machine of the automation was introduced in the Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd. Ishinomaki Mill on the operating line in 1978.
    In June, 2001 the fully automated the removing and installing work of the spacer which has a diameter out of five kinds in the Nippon paper Industries Co., Ltd. Yuhutsu Mill by multitude joints robot.

    On October 6, 2001, A severe earthquake occurred in the west region of the Tottori prefecture. Oji paper, Yonago mill was forced to be shutdown and many facilities were damaged due to the earthquake. After the earthquake, the crisis control procedures of the mill had been checked and reviewed by the mill personnel.
    In this paper, the damages of the mill facilities and our initial response to the earthquake are reported, and the examination of the mill's crisis control procedures is discussed.

    Oji paper will challenge a world speed record for white lined chipboard by PM N-2 which will start up in October, 2001 at Fuji mill. The new plant will produce white lined chipboard in a basis weight range of 150-450 g/m2. The wire width is 4. 7 m, and with a speed of 800 m/min, the new machine is the worldwide fastest fourdrinier board machine for white lined chipboard.
    Oji Paper Group have 12 paper machines for white lined chipboard. All these machines were built before 1973. As a result these machines have low productivity and efficiency than new type machines. After the start up of PM N-2, some small machines will be scrapped.

    Medium consistency ozone bleaching plant was started up at Yufutsu mill in January 2001. This is the first plant that use ozone gas as a bleaching sequence in Japan. By changing conventional C/D-E/ op-D into ZD-E/op-D, we have entirely excluded the usage of elemental chlorine. The ozone generator is the maximum class in the world as one unit capacity, which can provide a high concentration of ozone in oxygen (12% by weight) at a designed output of 120 kg of ozone/hr.
    The pulp that is bleached by the ozone ECF sequence has not had any troubles with a quality of the paper products. The cost of ozone ECF is lower than the cost of ECF that was made from chlorine dioxide as a main bleaching chemical. The results of the ozone ECF is as good as was expected from the laboratory studies. Effluent AOX and chloroform emissions have decreased significantly for starting up the ozone bleaching plant.

    Oxygen bleaching sequence, efficient washing system and reinforced effluent treatment facilities that had been introduced in Hachinohe mill of Mitsubishi Paper Mill since 1988, was allowed to reduce adsorbed organic halogen (AOX) with greatefficiency. However the global environmental demand intensely trends toward more and more reduction of emission or pollution. In view of the situation, the introduction of the elemental chlorine free (ECF) bleaching sequence to Hachinohe mill has been decided in 1999.
    In October 2000, No. 3 BKP-line, the product line of LBKP, was adapted for ECF bleaching sequence with the minimum conversion of existent bleaching facilities except continuous cooker, washing facilities oxygen bleaching stage and so on. D0 (E/O) PD, sequence, in which the existent bleaching towers could be used, was selected for the ECF bleaching sequence on No. 3 BKP-line.
    It was found that the brightness of oxygen-bleached pulp instead of the kappa number of Oxygen-bleached pulp dominated the bleaching efficiency on ECF bleaching sequence in contrast with the conventional chlorine bleaching sequence. In the operation of ECF bleaching sequence, the prevention of scale and the reduction of bleaching chemicals have been carried out.
    In this report, we describe the operational experience of ECF bleaching in this last year and discuss the main issues in ECF bleaching such as the influence of hexeneuronic acid in unbleachedpulp.

    Daishowa Honsha Mill Suzukawa converted the oxygen delignification to a two-stage system. Increasing production capacity and dealing with conversion from chlorine-based to ECF bleaching were the main reasons behind the investment of two-stage oxygen delignification (DUALOX) system. The benefits of Dualox system are the intermediate MC pump as a booster, compact pre-reactor (TUBE), and simple system. Since the start-up in November 2000, the kappa reduction has increased by 4.6 point, brightness of unbleached pulp by 2.2 point, and viscosity by 0.7 point. This improvement of unbleached pulp qualities has achieved a 10% savings on bleaching chemicals, and a 10% reducing COD effluent load.

    No. 2 machine (PM 2) and No. 3 machine (PM 3) of Ibaraki Mill Takahagi started up in December 1961 and January 1971 each. PM 2 and PM 3 produce total about 450 t/d coating base paper. We adopted TWIN-HSM Coater from BTG, Sweden in May and August 1998 on PM 3 and PM 2 size-press part to improve better quality, to increase production of coating base paper, and to produce machine finished merchandise grade in future.
    This article introduces the latest operating experience of PM 2, PM 3 and TWIN-HSM.

    The contaminant and pitch which sticks on the backing roll was the problem for the quality of the coating. Despite the use of flow-clean cleaning system on the backing roll, there were still problems of the build up pitch when operating nonstop for few days. To clean the roll, operator needed to scrape off the backing roll with the sandpaper. The new device was developed for automation of the cleaning with sandpaper.
    Development was a great success, Auto-Sanding-Device was able to clean the roll. The flexibility of the device made it possible to clean the roll during the operation. This report introduces about the development and the device itself.

    N2-machine for newsprint was started in Feb., 1998, at Yatsushiro mill. This machine has a lot of newest equipments, using the highest technologies. The jumbo rolls and spools handling system is one of them, and introduced into N2-machine for reasons of automatically transfer.
    This system has two works, the jumbo rolls are transfered by the lower guide rails from reel to rewinder, and spools are transfered by the upper guide rails from rewinder to reel. In No. 2 winder, the jumbo rolls and spools handling is carried out by Jumbo Roll Carriage which has two stages.
    This system has some accessory devices as follows.
    (1) Device for putting the rest paper on the spool into the pulper.
    (2) Jumbo roll paper end tape applicator.
    (3) Auto splice device between the jumbo rolls.
    Therefore automatically transfer is realized today.

    We, Hokuetu Kamiseisen are located inside of Hokuetu Paper Mills, LTD. Niigata Mill. We are in charge of sheeting and wrapping jobs. Our employee is about 370 and our main jobs are sheeting and wrapping for 70, 000 tons permonth. Our roll shipping is about 50 percents and remaining 50 percents is sheet shipping. We have 3 Jagenberg sheeters with Speed-piler. Speedpiler means that we can change pile on layboy without any sheet loss and without reducing operation speed.
    We would like to present our operating performance of sheeter with Speed-piler on this report.

    We have developed a paper material called “Fine press” for use in paper tray and paper cup processing. The new paper can be squeeze processed to achieve “deep, strong and smooth” formation like that of plastic materials to produce trays and cups. Such processing is impossible using conventional paper.
    We have discovered a way of improving a paper's forming capabilities by increasing the paper's breaking elongation ratio (the degree of elongation just before the paper breaks) against the stretching force applied during formation and also increasing the paper's compressibility.

    We describe the formation of microporous coating layers using a mechanical stirring method of introducing and dispersing air bubbles in resin-containing liquids. These microporous coating layers have been characterized in terms of their surface structure and optical property. The key technology in obtaining successful microporous layers is how to control the pore size of the microporous coating layers. Therefore, in our own research program, we have made intensive studies for obtaining a lot of fine air bubbles and stabilizing them in resin-containing liquids in order to obtain a large number of fine pores on the surface of the coating layers.
    In the toner-based marking application, both non-printed and printed areas of the paper having microporous layer exhibit matte tone. There is little change of the gloss of the matte paper by increasing the solid fill area unlike a plain or pigment-coated paper. And print qualities and line qualities are improved and high quality picture is obtained.

    The new indoor chip yard was installed aiming at increase in chip storing capacity of the mill and the worn-out chip screening system was replaced with the new CTSS at Kishu Mill in 1998. The indoor chip yard is the warehouse-type steel structure of which capacity is about 33, 700 m3. This yard can store incomparably larger volume of chips than the conventional silos. The Tubefeeders, which allow first-in first-out, longer active length and lower power consumption, were installed in the yard as reclaimers. The chip thickness screen and the conditioner which conditions overthick chips were installed in the chip screening system. This article describes advantage and benefit of this new system and the problems the mill had encountered in operation.

    Chuetsu Pulp & Paper's Futatsuka Mill is located in the southern part of Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, rather peaceful area on the western side of the Shou River surrounded by the green farmlands where the Japanese Alps can be seen far away. Its main product being newsprint, The mill also produces printing paper, book paper, medium quality paper and bleached paper. The two paper machines, one 3, 800 min wide and the other 7, 300 mm, together produce 190, 000 tons of paper a year. 250 tons of TMP (thermo-mechanical pulp) and 360 tons of DIP (deinked pulp) are produced per day. KP (kraft pulp) is brought from Noumachi Mill in slush and lap. Some imported mechanical pulps is also mixed depending on the paper grades. We have two boilers and a steam turbine that generates 85% of the mill's required electricity.
    We have continued to reinforce our environmental protection facility in accordance with the transitions of the production facilities. As for our activated sludge operation, when environmental matters became an issue in 1973, we built three 75 kW surface aeration systems to dispose 6, 400 kg per day of highly concentrated BOD effluent from the former CGP (chemical groundwood pulp) production system. Later the CGP system was replaced with the TMP system and the DIP system was installed. The production increased yearly which lead to the instability of the activated sludge operation. The Saturn and the Sun Jetter was installed to cope with this problem.We would like to particularly focus on the operations of Saturn hereinafter.
