Deglutition as well as respiration is the one of the most basic behaviors. However, in the course of almost all kinds of the neuromuscular diseases, patients may suffer from dysphagia. There have been several ways being proposed to save such conditions. In this paper, nonsurgical treatment and management methods were discussed.
In general, severity of the neuromuscular disease is classified into three stages. In first stage, patients complain of slight misdeglutition and longer feeding time. For this stage, it is necessary to instruct them to swallow whatever they feel easy and also take enough time to finish eating. In second stage, it becomes marked that the coordination movement for swallowing is disturbed and patients suffer from severe dysphagia. For this stage, rehabilitation of the deglutition is indicated. The third stage of the neuromuscular disease is the end stadium of the disease. In this stage, patients should be taken care for life saving purpose.
Concerning the rehabilitation of deglutition, it can be said that there are some differences in rationale from physical rehabilitation. One of differences is to recruit the remaining reflex activity to perform swallowing. Actual method was discussed.
