Anthropometric data for elderly population is demanded by many industries in an aging society. Physical characteristics change during ageing, but the efforts to differenctiate the elderly and general population has not been made enough in collecting anthropometric data. The purpose of this study was to verify applicability of three dimensional (3D) scanning measurement by comparing difference between manual and scanning data and time spent for the measurement with younger participants. An experiment was conducted on the participants in their 40's and over 70's to measure body dimensions by both methods. The result showed that the scanning time did not differ in age, but the difference between the measurements was significant. This study concludes that procedure of the general 3D scanning method is applicable for the elderly, whereas the method is not appropriate in terms of data processing due to postural difference. Later, developing a new method is required with reflecting the postural difference of the elderly.

The objective of this study was to understand gait kinetics while walking on a sand surface (vs. hard surface) with wearing a traditional military ALICE backpack (vs. modularized MOLLE backpack). Twenty healthy male students participated in this study. Each participant completed a total of 72 trials (3 good trials for each testing configuration). These testing conditions were combinations of two surface types (hard, sand), two transverse slopes (flat, 10°), two walking speeds (self-selected, 4 km/h), and three load conditions (no load, MOLLE, ALICE). Walking on sand surface required a greater medial-lateral ground reaction force and a greater maximum vertical impact force. Sand surface gait also resulted in a greater mean knee abduction/adduction moment. Hard surface gait resulted in a greater maximum vertical thrust force, a greater maximum braking force, and a greater maximum propulsive force. In terms of backpack effect comparison, mean hip abduction/adduction moment was greater while wearing the ALICE than the MOLLE. These results suggest that walking on sand with a backpack may increase the potential for injuries from overuse and falls. Hard surface walking on the other hand may increase the risk of foot strain and foot blisters.

Currently many healthcare systems process electronic patient referrals in Thailand. However, these systems suffer from two main obstacles. First, they can only process referrals from hospitals that use the same system. Consequently, medical staffs use such traditional methods as faxes or postal mail to transfer patient data. The second obstacle is the identification of patients when they cannot provide personal information by themselves. These obstacles hamper medical diagnoses. To cope with these obstacles, this paper proposes an electronic patient referral system with data exchange and fingerprint patient identification. From the initial phase of this research, we designed a cloud-based healthcare platform that provides such services as data exchange that allows the system to search for patient data using citizen IDs. In addition, this paper proposes an extended platform service: fingerprint identification. This service responds to citizen IDs from existing citizen fingerprint databases obtained during Thailand's citizen registration process. By combining these two functions, we support medical staffs who are expected to operate the referral process faster and more conveniently and improve the quality of care for patients.

Identifying users' implicit needs has been recognized as a key factor of product success. Thus, the importance of observing user experience (UX) for comprehensive understanding of users has been continuously emphasized. However, observing user behavior and analyzing collected data require abundant time and effort. Also, there has been little success in developing efficient techniques to assess user experiences. The aim of this paper is to analyze and interpret text data which was collected by user’s natural language more effectively and efficiently using SOM (Self-Organizing Map). Diary methods were conducted to collect users' emotional experiences on smart TV by users' natural language with twenty participants for one week. They were especially asked to describe their emotions why they happened in a certain episode. As a result, a total of 311 episodes was collected, and 268 words remained after preprocessing. Based on the co-occurrence matrix, SOM calculated the codebook which represents similarity among episodes. Similarity between episodes could be identified by analyzing a two-dimentional map, and 15 groups were classified. Characteristics of each group could be represented by a frequency of words. From the results of this paper, major patterns of TV-viewing could be identified through SOM. Moreover, implicit user values were identified by analyzing users' emotional experiences, which will help in developing both new and useful functions for the smart TV.

We proposed a methodology for estimating the psychosomatic state transition of a human. We named it “The changing four term state hypothesis”. This changing state hypothesis consists of two orthogonal axes. The vertical axis of the changing state hypothesis can be quantified based on the activity level of the autonomic nerve system. The horizontal axis of the changing state hypothesis can be quantified based on the activity level of the homeostatic function. From these two axes, the psychosomatic state is classified into four states. This state of human body is always going back and forth among these four states. This psychosomatic state will be various based on the individual characteristics such as the preference of each operator. For example, while an operator uses a support system, the activation level of sympathetic nerve becomes predominant. Therefore, it is important to estimate the psychosomatic state in consideration of individual characteristics because each operator has own state transition of “the changing four team state hypothesis”. On the other hands, the psychosomatic state changes under the external stimuli like olfactory stimulus or acoustic stimulus. These external stimuli can be utilized for the human machine interface of support system. For example, it was reported that the sonic system mounted on a car or a train enables to minimize the drowsiness of operator and the super-sonic system can minimize the mental stress. We think that if it becomes possible to estimate the psychosomatic state of human, we can provide the suitable human support system that corresponds to the change of psychosomatic state. In this research, we investigated the transition of psychosomatic state under presenting olfactory stimulus, auditory stimulus and mental workload. Finally, we analyzed the relation between the psychosomatic state transition and individual characteristics.

A scaling method utilizing affective adjectives is widely used to conduct universal assessment. These adjectives, which are commonly applied to usability tests of products, are composed of various affective adjectives ranging from simple to complex. However, subjective responses make it difficult to utilize objective measures especially for complex affective adjectives. Additionally, various affective adjectives have semantic associations to assess complex affective adjectives. Therefore, this study was intended to apply the concept of spreading activation theory which examines the semantic distance between words extracted from information regarding long-term memory. This study investigated the association with simple and complex affective adjectives using subjective questionnaires and SAT(Spreading Activation Test) on earphones. The results of this study showed that there can be a quantitative evaluation of the affective assessment by using spreading activation theory. In addition, this method can facilitate the assessment of complex affection adjectives.

Nowadays, user experience (UX) is treated as an essential element to be considered by smart device designers. UX of the disabled is also considered important, as the welfare of the disabled has become a major issue in today's society. This study aims to propose a new concept of the value of UX, from the perspective of the human life value. UX design principles and UX design properties on a smart device design for the disabled were also defined to enhance the value of the smart device's experience. Literatures that related to UX, human/life value, and product/service's value were collected from various academic fields like philosophy, economics, ergonomics, and education to define and analyze the smart device UX. Industrial literatures related to smart device/application design guidelines, usability/accessibility guidelines were also collected to develop the UX design principles and properties. Collected literatures were analyzed to define the value elements of UX such as utilitarian value, affective value, and social value that affect the human life value of the disabled. UX design principles were developed based on the value elements of UX and existing design guidelines. The UX design properties were refined from the literatures.

Since wearable devices are attached to the body, the sense of fitness can be an important element. In this study, therefore, the affective quality of ear-related product was examined to quantify the structure of the process of affective quality. First, vocabularies related to the sense of fitness(the sensation when a person wears ear-related products) were collected and selected for the evaluation of affective quality of ear-related products. Second, factor analysis was conducted for these vocabularies. As a result, the hook part has four major affective vocabularies and the earplug part has three major affective vocabularies. Third, a causal relationship between the sense of fitness and affective quality variables was identified using structural equation modeling. The result showed that the design element that has the greatest impact on the fitness of the ear-related product is the earplug. Above all, a sense of comfort showed a significant impact on overall satisfaction. Through this study, we identify not only the main factors that affect the satisfaction from the sense of fitness but also product design elements that affect the sense of fitness were also identified.

User-centered design (UCD) gives extensive attention to human's physical, cognitive, and psychological characteristics at every stage of the product and service design process. Most of human property measurements currently available in UCD are limited to the physical body dimensions such as length or girth of a particular body part. This study aims to derive new concepts of human property measurements such as perceptional and cognitive characteristics from user scenarios. User scenarios were generated by combining factor levels, each belong to three factors such as user profile, user state, and environment. A total of 60 user scenarios were created and analyzed to derive relevant human property measurements, for example, sensory ability (visual/auditory/tactile), dynamic range of motion, and emotional/mental state, etc. The results demonstrated that various human property measurements could be efficiently derived from the user scenarios, without resorting to cost/time-consuming methods such as an observation and interview. The list of human property measurements derived in this study would be systematically measured and disseminated to be used for designing user-centered products and services in the further research.

Recently, the number of bedridden patients has increased because of the rapid growth in the aging population worldwide, and most of them have lived on an electric adjustable bed (EAB). Caring for these patients on an EAB is easier and more comfortable than on the floor or a manual adjustable bed. However, the use of an EAB has a negative effect on the slip length and the dorsal and abdomen loads on the patients. Therefore, the aim of this research was to evaluate the usability elements by elevation of the EAB’s back support using a motion analysis.
In this study, an experiment with 10 subjects (5 men, 5 women, 29.9 ± 2.28 years, 165.8 ± 8.26 cm, 64.2 ± 11.7 kg;mean ± SD) was carried out. The relative motions of the EAB and subjects were captured by a motion analysis system using a customized marker set (EAB: 24 markers, subject: 16 markers, U.E.T.C.).
The results of this study show that the slip length and the dorsal and abdomen loads increased as the back support of the EAB was further elevated, and the slip length and dorsal load were not restored when the elevation angle was returned to 0°.
A trend toward decrease in changing rate of dorsal load while increase of abdomen load were observed when the back support was elevated from Sections II-1 and II-2 (head-of-bed elevation from 30° to 60°). It would be expected that development of new care technology and care service would be possible with the results and methods of this study.

Owing to an increasing number of rehabilitation patients and shortage of professional therapists, various problems associated with ineffective and inadequate care have been occurring at rehabilitation sites. To address this issue, various rehabilitation robots have been developed. However, the development and use of strictly functional and technology centered rehabilitation robots has led to many usage and safety issues at rehabilitation sites (hospitals). Thus, the aim of this study was to determine possible improvements for rehabilitation robots through the opinions and suggestions of the stakeholders via contextual interviews based on usage scenarios as well as to analyze the importance of each recommended improvement through an analytic hierarchy process (AHP).
In this study, the usage scenarios of rehabilitation robots were established through the suggestions of the stakeholders (24 occupational therapists, 2 caregivers, 7 doctors, and 4 robot researchers). In addition, user observations (5 times) and contextual interviews (6 hospitals and 10 therapists had participated) were carried out considering the established usage scenario. The major improvements identified through the interviews and observations were determined on the basis of following category: “support and aid tool for the prevention of compensation actions and range of motion are needed.”
It is expected that rehabilitation robot can be made safe and user friendly by incorporating the improvements suggested in this study.

Climate change now affects many people, some of whom suffer health problems due to a harsh life environment that features high humidity. Humidity and human health have a close relationship. The temperature may be comfortable, but various adverse effects and diseases can result from excessive humidity. This study explores the importance of localization in product design. My current work examines characteristics unique to the Korean living environment. In addition, we seek to clarify the role of individual characteristics and identify problems that occur when people use a dehumidifier.

Background: Sedentary behavior is characterized by physical inactivity and is associated with several health risks. Previous studies try to measurement of low back muscle fatigue using EMG (electromyograhy) in a long-term driving. However results show there are no significant correlation between muscle fatigue and back pain. Method: One subject volunteered to participate in this pilot study. In this study, experiment was consisted of pre-test and long-term driving test. Pre-test was designed to compare EMG and MyotonPRO results by evoked muscle fatigue at biceps. Before the long-term driving test, we selected 32 points of subject's back and measurement muscle characteristic using MyotonPRO. After driving test, we measured muscle characteristic using MyotonPRO. Results: Long-term driving test result shows that Frequency and Stiffness increased at right side of low back. Decrement, Creep and Relaxation was increased at left side of low back. Conclusion: These result shows that long-term driving evoked muscle's blood supply at right side of low-back and evoked a pain or overload. Application: Low back muscle characteristic change evoked by long-term driving would be measured using by MyotonPRO.
