I make brief reports on 1991 SAE International Congress, which was held at Detroit in Februarv 1991. Three papers concerned with liquid crystal and one paper concerned with electroluminescent were presented in the electronic display session. All of the three papers of liquid crystal were concerned with dot matrix displays and this indicates that the new era of information display for automotble has come.
In the session of Electronic Display and information systems, there were 4 presentations in reiation to Vacuus Fluorescent Displays. These were presented by Japanese makers, that were FUTABA Corp. and NEC Corp.. In the concrete, technical improvement of VFD, large-scale sraphic-type VFD, multi-color CIG-FIP, and active matrix FIP were presented.
This paper describes the man-machine interface and control sortware of a Navigation System for private automobiles. The system shows the accurate position of the vehicle on a CRT map display and can also provide useful information such as the locations of hotels, golf clubs, etc. The man-machine interface of this system consists of a menu display and touch-sensitive swithes on the screen. Due to safety considerations, some of the displays and operations are prohibited while the vehicle is in motion. A multi-tasking software system controls these functions. Most of the programs were written in "c", but assembly language was used for some basic input/output control programs. The total program size is about 384 Kbytes. This navigation system was installed in Mitsubishi's Diamante models in 1990.
