This paper reports on the SMPTE/ITU DTTB Tutorial Workshop. The workshop was held on October 29 and November 1 in 1993 at the L.A.Convention Center in the USA. It consisted of four sessions: "Source Coding and Service Multiplex" , "Planning Factor and Implementation", "Channel Coding and Modulation" and "Display Technology and Interoperability". This report intends not to cover all the items, but to take up some topics.
We have developed a MUSE decoder in which new techniques of sampling rate conversion and gamma processing are apllied. The point of development is to unify sampling rate in stationary area and motion area to 32.4 MHz. It combined low cost and high quality for consumer HDTV system. As a result of this development, we are convinced that it helps popularization of HDTVs in home market.
NHK has developed an Optical Fiber Broadcasting System as a new fiber broadcasting infrastructure. The aim of the optical fiber broadcasting system is to offer broadcasting services with multiple broadband video signals and interactive services such as Video-on-demand services and bi-directional ISDB. This paper describes the technical aspect and scenario of the optical fiber broadcasting system.
At NHK, we have introduced Simultaneous Program Production using HDTV and NTSC, for public recordings of television musical programs at. NHK Hall. This enable us to produce (record or broadcast) in two different television standards efficiently, using an HDTV OB van system and an HDTV downconverting system. In 1992, we started this simultaneous production at NHK Hall as an addition to previous production facilities. A new OB van was also introduced to this system in August 1993, equipped with an HDTV digital video switcher. Through the operation of this system, we were able to mature our simultaneous production method, and we are recieving satisfactory results.
"SIM-TV" was a challenging TV Show which simulated a future interactive TV broadcast . We introduced several interactive systems based on personal computers . Vewers made access to them by telephone or ISDN line and watch the result immediately on TV via broadcasting satellite. Virtual stages for the show were created using the Synthevision and computer graphics.
"Weather Sensor and Superinpose Display Unit" is a system that takes in superimposes the Weather Sensor into the same screen of each remote-contorol camera. By this system . the viewers can gain more information about temperature, humidity and so on.
