Although a hierarchical format for the EDTV-II input signal source has been proposed, a progressive scanning signal is desirable. The authors have proposed and investigated a new 4 : 2 : 2 : 4 signal format in which progressive information for luminance is added as "4" to the normal 4 : 2 : 2 interlace signal. This 4 : 2 : 2 : 4 format can be used as a signal source through signal conversion not only for present 4 : 3 broadcasting, but also for new media formats such as EDTV-II, HDTV, and U.S. ATV broadcasts. It can also be used to construct systems having high cost-performance. In this paper, we describe the 4 : 2 : 2 : 4 format and report on multimedia-application systems that use it.
