This paper describes the multimedia network system by optical link unit through the atmosphere. The optical link unit is possible to transmit data as a 10Mbit/s Ethernet at a middle distance. We developed a multimedia system on standard workstation, which directly record image data on HD for many hours. This system is used realtime JPEG image compression and decompression unit.
Recently, Virtual Reality has been increasingly researched on, especially there are a lot of studies on generating Virtual Fish on computer systems. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to automatically generate 3-D fish models from 2-D textures of fishes in illustrated books, handwriting, pictures, and so on. At first, We automatically separate several fins of fish from body using an original algorithm "Active Balloon". Next, users choose front view model and top view model of fish among the six samples each other. Finally, the number of patch is decreased without any influence on the accuracy of the generated 3-D model in an attempt to reduce the time cost when texture mapping is applied.
We have developed a VR skiing system to train skiing amusingly and effectively. The system consists of a skiing training machine, 90 inch screen, a projector and 3 PCs. A skier rides on the skiing training machine which is fitted with 9 weigh/angle sensors, and enjoys skiing on a "virtual slope". Using measured data by these sensors, developed system simulates the skier's motion on the virtual slope. The simulation is based on dynamics model of real skiing. Acoording to the simulated skier's motion, CG images and sounds of the virtual slope are generated. Therefore he can experience realistic skiing. In addition, some skiers can ski on same virtual slope at the same time and enjoy a dual slalom, because the systems can connected to each other through network.
Optical analog computing based on a Fourier transform and a holography is considered as a candidate for the first practical optical computer. Since a basic physical phenomenon of a Fourier transform and a holography is a diffraction of light, we have developed the parallel aligned nematic liquid crystal spatical light modulator (PAL-SLM) with high diffraction efficiency for optical analog computing. Also systems utilizing a joint transform correlation (JTC), for example, a fingerprint identification and a displacement measurement, have been developed by using the PAL-SLM as a key device. These continuing efforts in device and system development will bring the current technology one step closer to realizing a practical optical computer.
