An experiment on a pulsed cold cathode PIG ion source of modified Keller-type was investigated. The source was designed for a Cockcroft-Walton accelerator for a pulsed neutron generation. Ion current of 10 mA was extracted from deuterium discharge at the discharge pressure of 10-2 Torr for the discharge current of 0.5 A and the extraction voltage of 20 kV. The ion energy spectra were observed in detail, and it was observed that an energy spread was narrower than that which was observed by Nagy. The voltage to maintain the discharge rises day by day, but change in the energy spectra was small. This new designed ion source is convenient and more suitable for practical use.

Results obtained from analyzing gas and measuring the amount of outgassing showed that in the case of untreated film, the amount of outgassing from 24 films was in the order of 10-3 Torr·l·sec-1several hours after evacuation and, further, that the main gas component of the film inserted into the camera chamber was water vapor. Another preliminary experiment showed that the holes and pipes between the specimen chamber and viewing chamber were so small that, in the case of differential pumping, the vacuum degree in the specimen chamber and gun chamer was hardly dependent on the vacuum degree in the viewing chamber.
The new pumping system for the JEM-100B Electron Microscope is provided with a liquid nitrogen trap at the junction of the main pumping line and the line from the viewing chamber. Owing to this vacuum system, the vacuum degree in the specimen chamber and gun chamber reached the lower 10-6 Torr region.

A method for crystallization of LiAl compound has been studied in films deposited on to glass substrates at 350°C in vacuum of about10-6 Torr. Good compounds of the films 1μ thick are obtained after the films are annealed at the substrate temperature of 350°C for more 90min, if the evaporation is made in order of Al, Al+Li and Al at the same temperature; the co-evaporated Al and Li are sandwiched between the Al films. The degree of crystallization of the films has been examined by electron diffraction and electric conductivity measurement.
The crystallized films show the temperature dependence of the conductivity of “Semiconductor” at temperatures above about 200°C. The smallest conductivity obtained at room temperature is 2×103Ω-1cm-1, where the purity of the Li-component of the compound is 99.8% and that of the Al-componentof it is 99.99%.
