Needs of applying 3D CG technologies to television program have been increasing recently and its way of utilization has been diversified accordingly. "Science Eye - the Digital Picture Book of Space -" is one of the most frequently use 3D CG for its production. In this paper we have outlined our challenge and development of making graphics animation easily understood by viewer, generating 3D animation based on 2D image data for example, through the explanation of some real examples we did before.
KINDS (Key INformation Display System), a prompt election reporting system for TV broadcasting, has been developed and was applied to the election of the House of Councillors on 12 July 1998. The system superimposes the elected candidates' names on the various pictures broadcast by each local NHK station simultaneously, synchronously and promptly. Images of the names are encoded by a new method which uses arithmetic coding and achieves high compression rates without information loss. A multicast/IP protocol is used for transmitting the codes to the local stations via an Ethernet LAN. This achieves rapid transmission of the codes with reduced traffic volume. An overview of the system is reported.
This paper explains the new real time CG system in Asahi News Network Group. We have developed system using PC and frame memory PCI bus card. Thus, we realize lower cost than previous system such as using EWS and frame memory equipment. It is possible to create images with various functional actions. We operated this system last election. And the system was running without problems.
Use of 3D CG for television production has been generalizing in accordance with improvement of CG technology. We have been developing and applying an in-house CG system which can generate high quality images in real time for our program production. In this paper we have described our challenge and development of in-house real time CG system for a broadcasting TV station.
