Ce^<3+>-doped strontium thiogallate (SrGa_2S_4 : Ce) thin films which show blue emission have been prepared by multi-source deposition (MSD). Sr metal, Ga_2S_3 and CeCl_3 powders were used as source materials. It was found that the annealing in H_2S atmosphere was considerably effective for the improvement of the crystallinity and luminescent properties of the SrGa_2S_4 : Ce films. When the films deposited at a substrate temperature or 450℃ were annealed at 800℃ for 1〜2 hours in H_2S atmosphere, the improvement of cathodoluminescent intensity larger than 50 times was accomplished. Moreover, the films showed blue emission with the CIE coordinates of (0.12,0.10).

Aging characteristics have been studied for SrS : Ce and SrS : Ce, Zn thin-film electroluminescent (TFEL) devices. Dynamic space charge, which is unique characteristics of SrS : Ce devices, is reduced by Zn codoping. As the result, both the phosphor field in SrS : Ce layer and EL luminance increase. The decrease of EL luminance by aging is thought to be caused by the decrease of the phosphor field. The value of dynamic space charge does not change, while luminance and phosphor field decrease. Possible origins of the degradation of SrS : Ce TFEL devices are increase of static space charge and/or shallowing of electron traps.

Eu-complexes for organic electroluminescent (EL) devices with pure-red emission were investigated. The β-diketone complex with fluorene has been developed as a new material having superior luminescent efficiency and volatility suitable for vacuum deposition. Furthermore, the novel structural EL device with the emitting layer consists of a Eu-complex-doped hole-transport material was demonstrated. This device emitted red emission from Eu by the energy transfer from the hole-transport material to the Eu-complex.

It is proved that doping of materials with high melting temperature of CaF_2 and LiF results in preserving life time long The application of electron-injecting layer using CaF_2 causes lowering the threshold voltage and improvement of luminance by increasing the electron injection efficiency from the cathode.

The rubbed polymer films are widely used in practice, while its alignment mechanism has not yet been sufficiently clarified. In this work, we determined the order parameters of liquid crystal as a function of distance from the surface to bulk by using FT-IR method. We have also investigated the relation between the rubbing strengths and the surface order parameters. From the result, we first clarified that the order parameter of the liquid crystal remarkably decreases with approaching to the surface. In addition, the order parameter at the surface was found to be surprisingly low even if the rubbing treatments are strong enough.

Light-scattering (LS) textures were induced into long pitch N^* π-twisted planer textures by applying burst electric fields. Elecrto-optical characteristics and the forming-, holding- and eliminating-mechanism of the textures were studied, experimentally. The texture was composed of very many micronized planar textures with three kinds of twist angles, π-twisted and π±π-twisted textures. The LS texture has a fairly rapid responsibility and lower voltage driveability. It seems that delicate fluctuation of aligning property of two aligning layers and differences among the elastical distortion energies of each three twisted textures take part in the forming- and holding-mechanisms of the LS textures.

We have fabricated a new ferroelectric liquid crystal display device that exhibits monostable electrooptical characteristics with a good contrast ratio (160 : 1) owing to defect free, a grayscale capability without threshold, a wide viewing angle, and a fast response (70μs) by a polymer stabilization in terms of a UV photocure of the doped monoacrylates with mesogenic side chain particularly at a temperature where the liquid cryastal medium is in the SmC^* phase under the simultaneous application of a monopolar electric fields.

We investigated influences of the protective layers of polarizers on the viewing angle characteristics of STN-LCDs using a numerical simulation based on Berreman's 4x4 matrix formulation. Usually triacetylcellulose (TAC) is used for the protective layers since its in-plane retardation is small enough not to affect optical properties in normal direction. However, its out-of-plane retardation is relatively large so that it affects the viewing angle characteristics. We found that the conventional protective layers worsen the viewing angle characterisitics of STN-LCDs, and that the viewing angle characereistics can be improved remarkably by increasing the twist angle and optimizing the out-of-retandation of both the protective layers and compensation films.

We have proposed a novel reflective LCD using hybrid aligned LC cell, mirror electrode inside of the cell and front scattering film on the cell. This reflective LCD has advantages of wide viewing angle, high resolution, high brightness, high contrast ratio, fast response and easy fabrication. In this paper we propose a full color reflective LCD using ECB and Bend mode LC cell and compare its characteristics.

We are investigating the important physical factors for the reproduction of the high order sensation in a display of images. Gamma has a close relationship to the reproduction of gradient and color. In this report, we discuss gamma in detail. We extend gamma definition of a constant value to non linear gamma which depend on signal level, and we propose a new expression of gamma curve. As a result of considering the extension, in the definition of television, non linear gamma is not a differential coefficient of the characteristic curve but a complicated function. And we reveal the relationship between gamma in the definition of television and photographic.

Raster moire fringes appear in high-resolution CRTs due to interferences between the raster lines and shadow-mask apertures. The moire leads to degradation of picture guality. Since there are various modes for the moire fringes, it has been difficult to evaluate them using a single compater simulation. This paper introduces a Gaussian weighting methed which enables to guantily the pereeption of both an in-phase and inverse-phase moire patterns. The method also allows to explain the inversion phenomenon of luminance distribution. An optimum electron beam profile is found using the method.
