In this report, we propose an approach to expanding aview of virtual 3-D environment. A HMD has been conveniently used for seeing a large information space in a virtual 3-D environment. However, the HMD screen does not provide sufficient resolution to support detailed works such as text editing. On the other hand, CRT doues not provide a view wide enough for looking around the environment. Our method is based on combining a see-through HMD and a CRT display to give users a virtual 3-D environment that has high-resolution and large work area. In order to evaluate the continuity between HMD and CRT display areas in our method, an experiment comparing our method with a method using only see-through HMD was conducted. Consequently, it was found that users have a sense of incompatibility with virtual objects at a boundary of CRT screen.

For extracting KANSEI factors from a picture, it is important to consider on what regions of a picture viewers would pay attention to. Highly attractive regions of a picture would affect the majority of viewer's impressions. By analyzing those regions, it becomes possible to predict viewer's impressions within a reasonable error. However, some pictures have no attractive regions. In such cases, viewers get impressions from the whole of the picture. Considering this, we have defined an evaluation function which allows to decide whether a picture has attractive regions or not. This paper proposes the evaluation function and a method for attractive regions extraction from pictures. Furthermore, we describe experiments on the method.

CAD systems for prototype-designs are required at a scene of architecture design. Existing drafting-CAD-systems are too complex for an architect to operate in such early design processes. In this study, we propose a new CAD system with simple and intuitive interfaces, which enables a user to create simple 3D-models in computer for better inspection of prototype designs. We achieve these interfaces by using hand-drawing sketches drawn by a user. In this report, we consider differences and functionalities on our implemented interfaces for treating hand-drawing sketches through experiments.

Communication aids for the people with disabilities has been studied extensively. Some of them are very useful for the people and are widely used, whereas others are not used in everyday life for many people. Although the reasons of this fact are not simple, one of them is the poor user interface. In this report we will give some results of investigation for communication aids based on the concept of media-interface that is previously introduced. We will also give some basic study on the glide of Japanese sign language, which is one of the important issues in generating sign motion pictures in either rule-based or editing approach.

A new type of media called'interactive movies'is proposed which will be realized by the integration of conventional medium such as movies, telecommunications, and video games. The interactive movies have the capability of creating a virtual world with various kinds of realistic/hyper-realistic scenes and computer characters. The metaphor of'Inter Communication Theater'gives people the ability to interact within this virtual world. Therefore people can experience the stories of the virtual world through interactions with the characters and the environments of the world. In this paper, the basic concept of such a new media will be described along with an experimental system we have developed.

Color matching degrees in both of colorimetry and appearance were investigated. It has been shown that chromatic chips were well matched with the corresponding reproductions on the CRT in both of colorimetry and appearance while achromatic chips were difficult to match in appearance.

Although numberless studies on image retrieval have been done, the achievements so far are still unsatisfactory. In this paper, we propose a new method that deploys the colour-pair information of an image. The colour-pair contains the colour information of neighbouring blocks of an image and it is used to determine the similarity between images. During the actual retrieval process, only these colour-pair files, which are relatively small in volume, are accessed. This thus gives us a much shorter retrieval time. The system is made further efficient with the introduction of hierachichal structure. Experiment results have shown that the overall performance of this approach is satisfactorily good.

In the home and in the public sector, the desire to have access to multi-media information over a network is rising, as computer improves along with the quality of the Internet. Accordingly, a new project called the'Virtual Library'(VL) was established last year at the NARA Research Center. The goal of VL is to develop a user interface for the easy-retrieval of digital information in the realistic virtual space of a library which is to be accessed by walking through 3D CGs. This paper describes the overview of the VL and the experiment on remote access to the VL from BBCC via B-ISDN.

This paper describes the Virtual Kabuki Theater the authors have recently developed. In the Virtual Kabuki Theater, people at different locations can be Kabuki actors in a Kabuki scene. In our system, Kabuki actors'3D models are created in advance. Facial expressions of a person are detected in real-time in the face images from the small camera fixed to the helmet worn by the person. Body movements of the person are estimated in real-time from the thermal images acquired by the infrared camera that observes the person. The detected expressions and body movements are reproduced in the Kabuki actor's model. Our implementation shows good performance. The Virtual Kabuki Theater is a first step towards human metamorphosis systems, in which anyone can change (metamorphose) his/her form into any other characters.

In computer vision, reflection on specular surface is sometimes an unexpected phenomenon, because overlapping images prevent us from applying standard vision algorithms. In this paper, we propose an on-line camera system for separating real images and virtual images reflected on specular surface such as glass. The proposed method is based on the following optical property : specularly reflected light is polarized strongly, while diffusely reflected light is not polarized and transmitted light is polarized feebly. We describe two methods for estimating specular reflection component from a sequence of images obtained by rotating a polarizing filter. We present several experimental results obtained by applying the system to real scenes with virtual images that demonstrate the effectiveness of the system.

Tactile and/or force displays are becoming important to interact with virtual objects in 3D displays. In order to present pseudo forces representing the forces on operator's hand, we used haptic phantom sensations elicited by two vibrators. Two mechanical vibrators are built in the grip of a small tool, to which operator's fingers and hand contact naturally. In this papers, we report perceptual characteristics of haptic sensations elicited by the two vibrators, and static and dynamic characteristics of elicited phantom sensations. We also prototyped a virtual tool employing phantom sensation by two vibrators and 3D motion sensing system using a pair of PSD cameras.

To realize the real-time electro holographic 3D display, it is very important to investigate high speed computing method of hologram data. We are studying high speed computing system and algorithm for generated hologram data. We investigated holographic-stereogram using parallax images. The DSP system was proposed to accelerate calculation of hologram. As a result, high performance generation of hologram data is realized, compared with the usual method.

We present a method to generate a new view based on an extraction of depth map from 5 cameras. For each frame, we first extract a dense and sharp depth map of the center camera. Then, we transform the depth map into that from a new view point. By properly exploiting images from inspection cameras, we generate a new view. Finally, viewing direction and scale of image are adjusted.

To recognize the whole three-dimensional environment, it is necessary to take images of real scenes in all directions and to obtain depth information from the two-dimensional images. In this report, we present an omnidirectional stereo method. Our method can detect disparities between two omnidirectional images. We first take two omnidirectional images at different heights using the omnidirectional sensor HyperOmni Vision, and then detect corresponding points between a pair of omnidirectional stereo images and obtain three-dimensional information. Experimental results show the feasibility of the proposed method with real omnidirectional images.
