The authors have developed the DVD Recorder with the DVD-RW discs. This DVD Recorder is the prototype for the first time which is based on "DVD Specifications for Rewritable/Rerecordabel Discs Part3 Video Recording". For this development, we have developed the new optical pick-up and signal processing LSIs to write/read the DVD-RW discs, new audio and video encoding platform and the firmware and new graphic user interface(GUI). Then we have made available of the DVD Recorder to the video recording users.

This paper describes a 192kHz, 24-bit digital-to-analog converter for DVD-Audio that achives 118dB A-weighted dynamic range, -104.3dB THD+N and superb signal amplitude linearity, and describes a system "Digital Re-master Processing" that extends the frequency range above 20kHz, based on the information in the frequency range below 20kHz contained in the input signal(original source)and recreates the CD sound quality source to the DVD-Audio high-bit and high-sampling source.

D-VHS trick-play system has been developed using two technologies. First of them is the reconstruction process of MPEG transport stream to reduce the size of picture data. Second is "Control marker method" that performs track-select tracking servo efficiently. In evaluation of this system, we confirm that the tracking servo gives quick response and high accuracy, and that the good quality pictures are reproduced.

We have newly developed the audio and video signal processing system for DV format VCR. This new system mainly consists of four LSIs: (1)Digital Read Channel LSI. (2)DV Coding/Decoding LSI. (3)Digital Interface LSI. (4)Video Signal Input/Output LSI. The System contains the digital read channel for the first time on DV format VCR. The digital approach on read channel has greatly reduced the variations of performance and has eliminated the needs for complicated adjustments. Digital Read Channel LSI has low power consumption of 280m W.

We have developed a new structure CCD called HA-CCD. HA-CCD has advantages in electronic charge and resolution. The reason of an advantage in electronic charge is that HA-CCD doesn't need to have any space for wiring sections that are unused for electronic charge on the surface of the CCD. The reason of an advantage in resolution is that HA-CCD has an offset sampling structure, so in horizontal and vertical directions HA-CCD has higher resolution than conventional CCDs. Horizontal and vertical directions are more important than diagonal directions for capturing world objects. HA-CCD will realize higher efficient Digital Still Cameras in resolution, S/N, dinamic-range and sensitivity. That will give high quality images for our users.

We have made a large improvement in the picture quality of a PDP through the advancement of 3 common technologies. These technologies are an advanced rib structure, an advanced driving method, and high picture quality IP conversion. These technologies have been incorporated into our 50-inch, high vision, 2nd generation PDP model.

We developed a multi-scan converter for the LCD rear projector by using Video DSP "LAP" that can handle various video signals in real time by software. This system accepts standard TV format(NTSC, PAL, SECAM), computer display signals(VGA, SVGA, XGA, SXGA)and other non-standard formats by automatic scan adjust system. Using flexibility of Video DSP "LAP", we realize multi-function(such as selectable interpolation method and test signal generator), reducing man power and short TAT.

We developed PC system which receives the terrestrial Digital TV broadcast in USA. The newly developed real time and bidirectional PCI interface and the software technology enable an single PCI board to receive DTV, and also the functionality such as internal hard disk recording and time-shifting. The CPU utilization is about 20 percent using a current 300 MHz CPU which shows DTV reception co-exists with other PC transactions in this system.

It is said the LP sound reproduced by well installed system is superior to the sound of CD. The difference mainly stems from the difference in the band-width of recorded signals. The band-width is limited to 20kHz before sampling in digitized sound. Authors propose a reproduction method which provide more virtual and realistic evvironment by utilizing ultrasonic component produced by sampling. Hearing tests show that the proposed method is effective.
