This paper presents the indoor propagation characteristics using 200 MHz indoor measurements for indoor service area design on multimedia broadcasting. The measurements were performed in office buildings in Yokosuka city, Kanagawa and conducted under some different conditions of line-of-sight indoor propagation. Measured data is compared with existing propagation models and discussed on 200 MHz indoor propagation characteristics such as the condition on which excess loss is happened by indoor space. Other system design parameters such as the outdoor to indoor penetration loss characteristics and the interference characteristics on multiple indoor transmitters are also discussed.

We have developed a small size indoor repeater that receives, amplifies, re-emits radio waves from the transmitting station for indoor reception improvement in multimedia broadcasting. As a result of performance test of the completed pilot model, it was clarified that a service area is calculated by a radio channel design approximately. We also reported measurement results of received level and MER for mobile terminal in fading environment.

The V-High multimedia broadcasting system uses a conditional access and conditional playback system that is robust under mobile broadcasting reception conditions and also flexible to the new service styles, such as file based broadcasting, while expanding the access control system already used in the terrestrial digital broadcasting. Although the conditional access (CA) interface has more functionalities than that of conventional systems, the implementation detail has been left to the manufactures. Manufacturers has freedom on the implementation, however, the implementation cost tends to be growing. In this paper, we describe the back ground and the design concept of the NOTTV IC card, which is for the access control of the V-High multimedia broadcasting, expecting to incubate the variety of receiver development environments.

The storage-type broadcasting service has variety of transmission parameters to improve the reception probability of the contents. We collect and analyze the reception data during our commercial broadcasting service, with wide range of different transmission parameters, and then we investigate the way to effectively deliver the contents using contents complementation via communications link. In this paper, our efforts to improve the reception rate of the storage-type content broadcasting service are described.

NHK is studying a method to synchronize video playback between multi-screens for an advancement of Hybridcast services. In this paper we propose a method that uses MPEG-DASH for the delivery of an IP stream that is to be displayed in synchronization with broadcasting. In the method an MPD file is periodically updated to adjust the starting position of IP stream as the broadcasting program progresses. Also the client buffers IP stream for precise synchronization based on the difference of time stamps of both streams. This paper also describes an experiment using a prototype system.

NHK is accelerating the development of production system and transmission-receiving system toward the launch of test broadcasting of 8K Super Hi-Vision (SHV) in 2016 according to the road map provided by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. New specifications for 8K SHV were standardized in July 2014. This paper describes a summary of a new subtitle, superimpose coding and transmission scheme and describes a subtitle transmission and receiving prototype system based on the specification.

We developed optical transmission system for an uncompressed 8K UHDTV (Ultra High Definition Television). Chromatic dispersion causes signal waveform degradation in long-haul optical transmission. It is a factor of limitations on a transmission distance. A dispersion compensation fiber is used for optical compensation of the chromatic dispersion, and forward error correction coding is used for electrical compensation. In this paper, we describe experimental results of chromatic dispersion compensation characteristics of our developed system, to which we applies both the dispersion compensation fiber and the forward error correction coding.

We have been developing an 8K-FPU (Field Pick-up Unit) that is wireless transmission system for Super Hi-Vision (SHV) program contribution. A millimeter-wave band is suitable for high-capacity transmission because wide bandwidth is allocated. Furthermore, millimeter-wave band transmission can achieve high spectral efficiency by using an OFDM scheme. One of the OFDM characteristics is higher PAPR (Peak to Average Power Ratio) compared to single carrier modulation schemes. The OFDM scheme for 42-GHz-band FPU that has many subcarriers requires large IBO (Input Back-oft) level of a PA (Power Amplifier). However, large IBO level for 42-GHz-band FPU causes degradation in the efficiency of the PA. This paper describes CAF (Clipping and Filtering) method and PTS (Partial Transmit Sequence) method of the OFDM scheme for 42-GHz-band FPU. Furthermore, the simulation results show that PAPR reduction methods can reduce 2-3 dB of PAPR at CCDF=10^<-2>.

Aiming at launching "Super Hi-Vision (4K/8K)" broadcasting by satellite, technical standard (ARIB STD-B44 ver.2.0) was drawn up. By drawing up the standard for satellite, technology criteria of IF signal transmission through satellite master antenna TV (SMATV) system are also considered. In order to evaluate transmission characteristics for 16APSK over cable TV transmission, we conducted experiments on robustness by interferences such as carrier wave, adjacent channel interference, and reflections. Experimental results discussed in this report were contributed to the Telecommunications Council from the JCTEA (Japan Cable Television Engineering Association).

We developed the broadcast TS transmission system using the IP network and build SFN of a master/slave synchronization system. This system controls and fixes the delay time, and it transmits a stable broadcast TS and clock to relay stations. We confirmed by experiments for extended periods that it's possible to construct SFN on the IP network. A burden of the operator when using, is reduced by automating the delay time control of OFDM modulators. And we built an efficient and a reasonable system such as sharing the VPN with a 4FSK radio communication system by reducing null packets.
