We have proposed a novel technique for the preparation of ferroelectric liquid crystalline polymer film using a spin-coating. In this film, a high quality homeotropically aligned film has been realized and several kinds of electrooptic switchings such as light scattering and birefringence types have been observed by applying an external field using in-plane electrodes. Characteristics of the switching are presented with an analysis of the switching dynamics which takes into account the inhomogeneous field distribution in the active area.

The thresholdless, hysteresis-free, V-shaped switching in an apparently antiferroelectric lqiuid crystal mixture is very promising in realizing attractive liquid crystal displays. [Proc. Asia Display'95 (Hamamatsu) 61]. In this report we will show an example of interface-induced thresholdless antiferroelectricity ; the substrate interfaces induce tilting randomization and Langevin type alignment from layer to layer, which are considered to be fundamental to the V-shaped switchng.

The electro-optical properties of PN (polymer network)-LCDs prepared by using some kinds of monoacrylates have been investigated. The liquid crystalline monoacrylates are effective in the reduction of the saturation voltage and the hysteresis. The memory phenomenon at the low temperature for PN-LCDs relates to the molecule structure of the polymer network. Furthermore the temperature dependence of the saturation voltage of PN-LCDs is discussed.

A photoactivated light valve is most powerful device for large-screen projection displays with a high brightness and a high resolution. Especially, the light valve using a polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) has an excellent characteristics for the projection displays, such as a high optical efficiency, a high resolution and a fast response. In this paper, we report the light scattering properties of PDLC, the optics design for a projection display, and a full-color video projection display based on three light valves, which has a high brightness over 1500 ANSI lumens and high extinction ratio of 80 : 1.

Models for ion behavior is given for the voltage holding ratio and residual DC voltage which cause image sticking. From the comparison of model and experiments, conductivity of LC layer, product of the number of ions, charge and mobility, was found to have correlation with voltage holding ratio. Whereas, residual DC can be described with the total charge of the adsorbed ion. In this experiments, this absorbed ion had linear correlation with the total number of ion in LC layer, and then the residual DC had the correlation with total charge of ion in LC layer.

We have reported on a director deformation on the basis of a unified anchoring energy [Phys. Rev. E, 52,681 (1995)]. The analytical treatment of this theory predicts that a surface weak anchoring condition makes an optical bistability in a Super Twisted Nematic cell possible. To confirm the prediction, we carried out experimentally the control of an anchoring strength using PolyVinyl Cinnamete films. A simple method is also proposed to measure a unified anchoring energy from the saturation voltage.

Hybrid-aligned nematic liquid crystal displays (HAN-LCDs) are known to have the device peformance of fast response speed and low driving voltage. In this paper, we have tried to improve the viewing angle characteristics of HAN-LCDs by using optical compensation films. The study is performed by doing computer simulation of the device. The result shows that the optical compensation films are useful to keep a wide viewing zone of the black level, and thus the good viewing angle characteristics is obtained.

Optical composition of a STN LCD with a single polarizer is studied by computer simulations and experiments. It is proved that contrast ratio of a single polarizer LCD strongly depends on it's width of viewing angle, and a high contrast ratio (7 : 1), 1/240 duty multiplex display is achieved, of which viewing angle is widen by optimizing refractive indices along z-axes of the retardation films. Also it is shown that the optimum △ nd of the liquid crystal layer that can display black and white is depends on difference between △ n dispersion of the liquid crystal and that of the retardation film.

It has been reported that hot electrons that excite luminescent centers can be injected into an emitting layer from p-Si as a result of band bending in Si at the interface between SiO_2 and p-Si. Therefore it is expected that driving voltage for an electroluminescent (EL) device is lower than that of a conventional EL device. In this experiment, an integrated EL device was fabricated on p-MOSFET and luminescent properties of this device was measured in view of realization of high-resolution EL display. When p-MOSFET was operated, a variation of the luminance about 15 cd/m2 was obtained. However it is necessary to improve the variation of the luminance to achieve a complete ON/OFF control of the luminance.

Mn-doped ZnS thin films were grown by low-pressure chemical vapor deposition using metal zinc vapor. H_2S and TCM (CH_3C_5H_4Mn (CO_3)) at the deposition temperature from 500 to 700 [℃]. The dopant concentration in films was adjusted by controlling the temperature of TCM. The crystal structure, composition, surface morphology and the electroluminescent characteristics were studied. There were strongly dependent on the deposition temperature. The crystallinity and the electroluminescent brightness were poor only at about 600 [℃], and at the other deposition temperature regions they were good. When the deposition temperature was 650 [℃] and TCM temperature was 10 [℃], the maximum brightness of 1110 [cd/m2] was obtained.

It has been tried to make the ZnS : Ag, Cl phosphors used in usual CRT conductive, i.e. the formation of In_2O_3 conductive layer using In[OCH(CH_3)_2]_3 by the sol-gel method. It was found that the very thin and uniform coating layer was formed on the phosphor surface. And it was thought that the this coating layer was crystallized due to the In_2O_3 powder prepared by the same method was showed the some peaks by XRD measurement. Cathodoluminescent properties were become better according to the increasing of the amount of the In[OCH(CH_3)_2]_3 at the low voltage region. Furthermore, it was showed that the luminance of the coated phosphor was showed higher than that of the uncoated phosphor after 15 hours irradiation by the electron beam. It indicates that the sol-gel coating layer is protected the phosphor surface by the electron beam irradiation.

SrGa_2S_4 : Ce films for blue-emitting thin-film electroluminescent devices have been prepared by multi-source deposition. Sr, Ga_2S_3 and CeCl_3 were used as source materials. It was found that Ga_2S_3 was decomposed to GaS and S_2 at the evaporation source, then GaS and S_2 vapors arrived at the substrate. The formation of SrGa_2S_4,GaS and SrS depends on the substrate temperature and Ga_2S_3/Sr flux ratio. It was also found that the annealing in H_2S atmosphere was considerably effective for the improvement of the crystallinity and PL intensity of the SrGa_2S_4 : Ce thin films. The SrGa_2S_4 : Ce film that was deposited at a Ts=450℃ and flux ratio of 100,and annealed at 800℃ for 3 hours in H_2S showed strong blue PL with CIE coordinate of (0.12,0.09).

For the purpose of preparing CaGa_2S_4 : Ce phosphor films for blue-emitting electroluminescent devices at a low substrate and annealing temperature, we have tried to accomplish it by multi-source deposition technique using Ca, Ga_2S_3 and CeCl_3 evaporation source. The structural and luminescent properties of the films depended on substrate temperature and Ga_2S_3/Ca flux ratio. The film including CaGa_2S_4 : Ce phase could be prepared by depositing at a substrate temperature of 550℃. However, the compositional fraction of Ga and S were very small compared with the stoichiometric composition. On the other hand, the film deposited at 450℃ and annealed at 700℃ or 800℃ for 3 hours in H_2S, consisted of CaGa_2S_4 phase and showed bright blue PL with peaks at around 460 and 510 nm.

Color-variable emission in electroluminescent (EL) devices based on multilayer π-conjugated polymer film is described. EL devices containing two emissive layers with different band-gap separated by hole-transporting layer exhibited color-variable emission depending on the polarity of the electric bias. It was also demonstrated that the use of a fluorescent dye-doped conjugated polymer as an emissive layer enabled polarity-and voltage-tunable multicolor emission.
