Several models, such as the Stoner-Wohlfarth (SW) model and the curling model, have been proposed for calculating the M-H curves of magnetic recording media. We created a new magnetization model and used it to calculate the M-H curves of both perpendicular and longitudinal media. The equation reproduced the M-H curves with small values of Hc/Hk for both types of media by use of a value of exchange interaction in a particle as a parameter.

Thermal relaxation is becoming more and more significant associated with decreasing grain size of media to achieve high recording density. In this paper, a seperating read and write head system of a single-pole write head and an MR read head is used for experiments in order to examine time-decay of reproduced head output. Results of a simulation associated with curling switching model is also discussed. The experimental and theoretical study clarified that less decay takes place at higher densities in perpendicular magnetic recording. Dependence on some media parameters are also shown. Influence of a single-pole head to the decay is discussed in order to improve the head performance.

To determine the optimum electromagnetic characteristics of metal-evaporated tape for consumer digital VCR system, we tested the magnetic tapes with different spacing factors. It was found that higher retentivity (Br), corecivity (Hc) and a constant magnetic layer thickness are essential for low error rates. An advanced metal evaporated tape for a consumer digital VCR system was developed based on these findings.

A novel magneto-impedance effect is investigated by introducing a Magnetic Microstrip Line in which a microwave power is directly flowed. The propagation of the microwave in the line can be modulated by external fields that cause changes in the permeability of the magnetic strip. The amplitude variation of the microwave as a carrier is rectified to obtain output signals. A simple structure sensor has been developed that exhibited a high change ratio of 48% in the transmission-line impedance and a wide signal bandwidth of 300 MHz. The present sensor has some advanced features in terms of the sensitivity and the bandwidth with referring to the previously proposed sensors.

A Mn-Ir alloy was investigated for antiferromagnetic layers used in spin-valve multilayers. In this study, Mn-Ir/Ni-Fe multilayers were formed by ion beam sputtering with various sputtering conditions. Exchange bias fields applied to the Ni-Fe layers were systematically investigated. When a mean diameter of the Mn-Ir antiferromagnetic layers was large, the exchange bias field applied to the Ni-Fe layers became high. The highest exchange bias field was about 15 kA/m in the [Hf (5nm)/Mn-Ir (15nm)/Ni-Fe (5nm)/Hf (5nm)/Si-substrate] multilayers.

The ultraclean sputtering process was newlyintroduced in the fabrication of CoNiCr and CoCrTa thin film media to establish a new concept in controlling microstructure. UC-process enables the realization of high H_c in both CoNiCr and CoCrTa media. This high H_c is mainly due to the realization of large magnetocrystalline anisotropy field of grains and low intergranular exchange coupling. UC-process realizes the adequate separation of grains by segregated grain boundaries even in media with thin Cr thickness of 2.5 nm, and enables grain size reduction without the remarkable increment in intergranular exchange coupling. In these media, the reduction of the grain size is most effective for the improvement of S/N_m.

A dc magnetron sputtering appratus assited by an inductively coupled rf plasma was designed and build. In this apparatus, thin film deposition was possible even at low dc voltage applied to a taget. Deposition rate increases with increasing ICP rf power. Perpendicular magnetic annisotropy in Co-Cr films seposited with this sputtering appratus decreased with increasing ICP rf power. It was surmized that high-rate deposition of Co-Cr films with large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is feasible both by use of ICP and application of positive vias voltage to substrate.

The relationship between c-axis orientation of crystallites and distribution of the perpendicular coercivity H_<c⊥> in Co-Cr films has been investigated through the evaluation of the H_<c⊥> of surface layer measured by Kerr hysteresis loop tracer. Higher Cr content and adequate addition of Ta seemed to be essential requirements to get higher coercivity of initial growth layer and good uniformity of H_<c⊥> through thickness direction. Co_<67>Cr_<33> underlayers and Ti underlayers were effective to attain better c-axis orientation of Co-Cr films deposited on them. However, such a good crystallinity in the Co-Cr films did not cause the large H_<c⊥>. Ti underlayers were effective to attain better recording characteristics.

We have studied preparation of the FePt films with high perpendicular anisotropy on glass substrates aiming at high density recording media. It was found that a high pressure sputter-deposition onto an underlayer of Cr (100) is useful to obtain an fct structure and control the c-axis of the fct crystal structure perpendicularly to the film normal. In the case of the direct deposition onto the glass substrates, we obtained isotropic M-H loops with high squareness in both the perpendicular and longitudinal directions.
