    Hierarchical storage system for video retrieval and preview system, used in broadcast center was studied. Performance of hierarchical storage system was studied with two parameters-average access time and occupied time. Average access time is time period from start accessing to library to start sending reference video data to HDD. Occupied time is time period from unloading the drive to end of sending reference video data. The result shows that hierarchical storage system with optical disk storage has shorter average access time, but has longer occupied time, compared to hierarchical storage system with tape storage.

    We developed the HDTV receiver for the BS(Broadcasting Satellite)broadcast with a hard disk drive for the early appearance of home servers. Since this system has the functions of "anytime services", the system has the character of compactness, lower power consumption and lower noise. We developed a IDE(Integrated Drive Electronics)disk controller that satisfy the requirements of home server. The controller provides the technique of disk access by 1MB, file system for recorded programs and recording/playback buffer management.

    The relationship between Co_xFe_<1-x>/Al-oxide / Co_xFe_<1-x> tunnel junction(X=100, 90, 75, 60 and 50)and the tunneling magnetoresistance was investigated. The maximum MR ratio yielded 40.7% for Co_<75>Fe_<25> junctions. After annealing at 200℃, we could obtain MR of 49% ratio with areas 12×12 μm^2 for Co_<75>Fe_<25> junctions. Bias voltage where the MR ratio decreased to half its 1 mV bias value, lay between 360 and 455 mV. The bias dependence of MR ratio was related to barrier height in all the junctions, namely MR ratio decreased more slowly with increasing bias for the junction with higher barrier height

    We have demonstrated a 1TByte/in^3 volumetric recording density using MR head, ultra-thin metal evaporated tapes with diamond like carbon protective layer and thin aramid base film in helical scanning system. By changing the amount of oxygen during evaporation, and thickness of the magnetic layer to obtain a low noise media, we found taht ME tapes consist of very fine ferromagnetic α-Co grain and Co-O grain, we confirmed that they show good thermal stability. Furthermore by controlling the surface asperity of the aramid base film, we have been able to decrease head wear. Ultra thin ME tapes are suitable media for high sensitivity heads such as MR heads.
