This paper reports thin-film electroluminescent (TFEL) devices using a binary compound phosphor such as Ga_2O_3. EL characteristics of TFEL devices with a Mn-, Cr-, or Eu-activated Ga_2O_3 phosphor thin-film emitting layer, prepared by rf magnetron sputtering or dip coating, have been investigated. Ga_2O_3 : Mn, Ga_2O_3 : Cr and Ga_2O_3 : EU TFEL devices produced luminances of 1018 cd/m^2 in green, 270 and 27 cd/m^2 in red emissions, respectively, when driven at 1kHz. It can be concluded that a new oxide phosphor using Ga_2O_3 as the host material are very promising as the emitting layer for TFEL devices.

Thin-film electroluminescent (TFEL) devices using a new multicomponent oxide phosphor such as CaO-Ga_2O_3 have been developed. EL characteristics of TFEL devices with a (CaO-Ga_2O_3) : Mn thin-film emitting layer prepared by rf magnetron sputtering were strongly dependent on the composition of the host material. Maximum luminances of 2790 (yellow emission), 215 (red emission), 30 (yellowish green emission), 16 (green emission), 6 (bluish white emission) or 2cd/m^2 (bluish white emission) were obtained in TFEL devices using a ternary compound CaGa_2O_4 activated with Mn, Dy, Tb, Tm or Ce, respectively, when driven by 1kHz ac sinusoidal wave voltage.

Gray scale in active matrix electroluminescent display (AMEL) has been produced by sub-frame averaging method. It is difficult for EL display to obtain 256 gray scale using only pulse number modulation, due to slower response time of EL devices than that of PDP devices. We proposed new method which uses the combination of pulse number modulation and amplitude modulation in a frame to solve this problem. We have applied this method to an AMEL pixel and demonstrated a feasibility of AMEL display with 256 gray levels.

Ce^<3+>-doped strontium thiogallate (SrGa_2S_4 : Ce) thin films with blue-emission have been prepared by multi-source deposition. Sr metal, Ga_2S_3 and CeCl_3 powder were used as source materials. The films were deposited at a substrate temperature of 450℃ and Ga_2S_3/Sr flux ratio of 50. After the deposition, they were annealed at 80O℃ for 1.5 hours in H_2S atmosphere. In this experiment, the dependence of the luminescent propreties of the film on Ce-contents in the film was investigation. The film showed the small red shift in luminescent spectrum and the decrease in luminescent intensity at Ce-contents higher than a critical value. It was suggested from the results of PL and CL measurement that the distribution of Ce luminescent center is uniform both at the suriace and in the bulk of the film. It was found that the optimum flux ratio of CeCl_3 to Sr, CeCl_3/Sr supplied for the substrate is around 3.0×10^<-2> for the luminescent intensity and spectrum.

Fabrication process of self-aligned organic EL devices with side-wall structure have been investigated. Principal point of the process is the formation of side-wall structure using reactive ion etching. Cathode was used as a mask for self-alignment and the insulating side-wall structure was formed around periphery of the device. The device characteristics was measured after side-wall fabrication. Emission was observed above 3.5V and was 1000cd/m^2 at 100mA/cm^2. After the side-wall process, wet-and photolithographic-processes could be applied. The emission have been also confirmed after final fabrication process.

Differences in the behavior of dispenser cathodes and oxide cathodes in laminar-flow type and crossover type electron guns were investigated by experiments and simulations under high-current-density conditions. When an oxide cathode is operated under such conditions, the heating effect due to Joule's heat in the oxide layer exceeds the cooling effect, depending on the product of the work function and the cathode current, resulting in a rise in the cathode temperature. This rise in cathode temperature aggravates deterioration of emission characteristics during the life of an oxide cathode. In the case of the dispenser cathode, however, the cathode temperature decreases under high-current-density conditions. When an oxide cathode in a crossover type electron gun is operated, there appear equipotential surfaces formed in the curved surface in the oxide layer. The formation of an equipotential surface leads to relaxation of the cathode loading. It is considered that this is the reason for the longer life of an oxide cathode in a crossover type electron gun than that of an oxide cathode in a laminar-flow type electron gun.

The degradation of a green-emitting phosphor Y_3 (Al, Ga)_5O_<12> : Tb by an electron bombardment was reduced with introducing Yb or Sc. The traps in these samples were evaluated by measuring thermoluminescence data. As for Yb, traps related to Yb increased and the color centers decreased with increasing Yb concentration. It shows that the influence of color centers is suppressed by the traps related to Yb. On the other hand, no new traps related to Sc were observed, and the color centers decreased with increasing Sc concentration. It suggests the formation of color centers is suppressed by adding Sc.

Homogeneously europium doped yttrium oxysulfide (Y_2O_2S : Eu^<3+>) red phosphor with fine grains has been synthesized from a mono dispersed sub micron size yttrium-europium hydroxy carbonate precursor, using sodium thio-sulphate as sulfiding flux. The materials synthesized have been characterized by powder x-ray diffraction, photoluminescence emission spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Phase purity, morphology, and grain sizes of phosphor powders depend on the flux composition and the calcination temperature. The result indicates that grain size distribution of the phosphor materials is retaining the grain size of starting material at low temperature and increase at high temperature.

Low voltage cathodoluminescent properties of the CRT phosphors (ZnS : Ag, Cl, ZnS : Cu, Al, and Y_2O_2S : Eu) coated with In_2O_3 conducting layer using In [OCH (CH_3)_2]_3 by the sol-gel method were investigated. It was found that the cathodoluminescent properties were changed extremely according to the variation of the coating thickness. In proportion as the In [OCH (CH_3)_2]_3 increase, the resistivity of the coated phosphor was decreased significantly. The charging-up on the phosphor surface irradiated by low acceleration voltage is suppressed to some extent. The deterioration of the coated phosphors is suppressed by further applying high vacuum. The number of incident electrons to the sample was evaluated as about 50% of that to metal electrode.

With the increasing number of on-board visual displays such as navigation systems, it is important to improve visibility of on-board displays in various visual environments, such as driving on a snow-covered road in fine weather. We propose a new displaying method based on the luminance adaptation, one of the human vision properties, associated with environmental luminance changes during driving. In this method, the luminance and the saturation of the display is compensated according to the adaptation luminance of the driver in order to perceive the constant brightness of the display even in the different environmental luminance. Experimental results of subjective and objective evaluation comparing the conventional display indicate the effectiveness of the method.

In order to cralify temporal and spatial distribution of VUV from xenon above the electrodes of ac PDPs, we observed 147nm and 173nm VUV emission from xenon by using two-dimensional ultra-high speed electronic camera designed and compleded for the present work. It is confirmed that xenon emission of 147nm is simultaneously generated on both cathodes and anodes, but the emission process above cathodes is different from the one above anodes, and the reaction of the discharge above cathodes and anodes are discussed. It is cralified that the surface-discharge ac color PDPs have the advantage of improving luminance and luminous efficiency from observing of the xenon gas discharge process.

Characteristics of a thin-film Y_2O_3 cathode covering an Aluminum thin-film electrode were investigated. Both the Al electrode and Y_2O_3 were made by EB deposition. This cathode shows a small change of discharge voltage after aging. And its lifetime is more than 50,000 hours due to the suppression of deposition of sputtered Al. The operational margin of a panel with this cathode structure driven by the pulse memory is more than 20V. Good quality TV pictures were reproduced on an 8-inch panel with resistor-in-cell structure. During the lifetime test by pulse memory drive the whole panel was driven stable and the panel has long lifetime enough to practical use.

It was reported that a TV picture is displayed on a 6cm diagonal DC PDP with positive column cell which was driven by DC mode memory scheme with 0.6 lm/W luminous efficiency. This paper reports followings : A same type 20cm diagonal panel with 0.57 cell pitch displays TV picture. 30 cel1s with wall phosphor shows 1.0 lm/W, luminous efficiency. The life is about 50000h. It is possible to remove vertical contaminate in the DC mode memory by compensating pulse with anode. We shows quantitatively dynamic false outline in the DC mode memory and if we use Kaji et al scanning method the false outline is removed.

We studied a high-resolution plasma display panel (PDP) for an engineering workstation (EWS) or personal computer (PC) monitor. With a high-performance multimedia monitor in mind, we attempted to develop a high-resolution 25-inch diagonal PDP with 1280×1024 pixels (SXGA). To evaluate the basic characteristics, we fabricated a 640×480 experimental panel with 0.39-mm pixel pitch. The fabricated panel exhibited a high luminance of 190 cd/m^2,a high contrast ratio of 60 : 1 or better, and a wide viewing angle of over 160 degrees. We confirmed that PDP has the feasibility as an EWS and PC monitor.

Relations between the decay time constant of phosphor emission and gray scale disturbance are derived for color PDPs. As the persistence of the emission becomes longer, the disturbance becomes less perceptible. The long decay, however, widens the region of disturbance, in addition to manifesting the tails of moving images. The disturbance can be reduced by decreasing the light-emission duty factor, but within a limited extent. Since the amount of the disturbance depends on the phosphor decay time, false colors appear for color images if R, G, and B phosphor have different decay times.
