CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS FREE ACCESSEvaluation was made for physical and mental workload in Japanese character input operations with mobile phones. Hiragana input operations were decomposed into thumb's "pressing" on and "moving" over the keypad. Physical workloads of pressing and moving were estimated by subjective report from human subjects. By combining those workload values with each machine's operation scheme and Hiragana sentence database's character statistics, we successfully evaluated the subjects' individual physical workloads for specific machines.View full abstractDownload PDF (489K) -

CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS FREE ACCESSIn this paper, we propose the Percept-Room like an intelligent environment. The Percept-Room recognizes the observed target and the hand-sign by a person, and then controls the targeted appliances instead of the person. The Percept-Room consists of a main PC that detects a position and movements of a human using the combined image through the 16 sets of the cameras, and camera PCs that recognize person, face direction and hand-sing according to the request from the main PC. CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS FREE ACCESSMultimodal Interface, which is based on the most basic human communication tool, is regarded as a very promising, future user interface. Multimodal interface enables us to communicate with computer easily, comfortably, without any trainings. This paper describes the outline of our experimental interface system, "MAICO", which is an interface agent using multimodal interaction. CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS FREE ACCESSThe authors developed two different types of agent-based applications that would be applied to real consumer electronics products. Firstly, the authors introduce the "Network Agent System" where users are able to interact with agents to fully enjoy a digital cellular phone, a home audio system and a car navigation system being integrated over the Internet, no matter where they are.
