We previously proposed a wide depth range super multi-view (SMV) display which consists of multiple SMV displays. It can enlarge the display depth range of three-dimensional images without visual fatigue by combining the multiple SMV displays in the depth direction. In this study, the dependence of the distance between two SMV displays upon the interval of viewpoints was examined by the subjective evaluations.

We have developed the viewing-zone scanning-type super multi-view display, which solves the visual fatigue problem caused by the vergence-accommodation conflict. The viewing-zone scanning-type super multi-view display can flexibly alter the generation of viewpoints, i.e., the number of viewpoints, the pitch of viewpoints, and the crosstalk among viewpoints. In this study, we provided super multi-view display of 1mm, 2mm, and 3mm of pitch of viewpoints.

In an auto-stereoscopic system of large viewing area controlling backlight by FPR (Film Patterned Retarder)-LCD panels, a parallax barrier of a hound's tooth checker pattern and another one-dimentional Fresnel lens. A barrier of a hound's tooth checker pattern has reduced the defocus level of backlight spots and image plane ununiformity. A Fresnel lens condensing in the longitudinal direction has made lower the adverse effects of diffused lights. Consequently, a large auto-stereoscopic system of high definition (47' High-vision) with low crosstalk and a wide visual area has been realized.

Whereas we enjoy the zoom up operation of general photographs, it is well known that the same operation is not possible for stereoscopic photographs as it collapse the stereoscopic vision. We developed a system to provide the natural stereoscopic vision even while performing zoom operation by adjusting the parallax appropriately and introduced the system to 3 places for exhibiting animated (zoom up/down) photographs. We introduce these case studies and reports the findings for future challenges in this paper.

Ultrahigh definition television (UHDTV) system is effective to apply for development of integral three-dimensional (3D) television system that is the one of 3D image capturing and displaying system, which can reconstruct spatial images. In this paper, we introduce Super Hi-Vision system named for UHDTV system developed at NHK STRL and integral 3D system based on this UHDTV. Especially we explain capturing parts in those systems and describe prediction of both progresses near the future.

We propose a new 3D method, called "Deep DFD display", which can enlarge the range of continuously perceived depth widely. In conventional DFD display, when the distance between front and rear plane is increased, perceived depth does not have a linear dependency on luminance ratio and is separated to near front plane, near rear plane and near midpoint between front plane and rear plane. In "Deep DFD display", by changing the frequency distribution of front and rear images, perceived depth has been achieved to have a linear dependency on luminance ratio.

Reflective imaging element based on the dihedral corner minor has been reported to form an aerial image. We have made a crossed-minor array (CMA), which is a reflective imaging element to from an aerial LED image. Our CMA can converge visible light and far-infrared at the same time. In this study, we have investigated three-dimensional temperature distributions generated by multiple heat sources. When the heat sources are located in the longitude direction, the thermal image covers a long range. When the heat sources are located laterally, the thermal image is separated laterally.

We succeeded in enlarging the viewing zone of a holographic image which was generated from an image captured by integral photography (IP). Although the quality of the reconstructed holographic image was somewhat degraded, we confirmed that we could observe the image of a large viewing zone (〜15 degrees) by using a lens array having a short focal length (2.2 mm).
