Reflective color LCDs with high-resolution picture are key devices for highly functional portable information terminals. In this paper, we numerically analyzed the effect of the dispersion of birefringence Δ of the LC and LC-polymer film on the electro-optical properties of new achromatic reflective LCDs using a single-polarizer DTN-LCD and FDTN-LCD with a quarter-wave plate. We found that the LCDs using the typical LC and LC-polymer film exhibit a very high contrast ratio and a high lunminous of about 50% by optimum design of the device parameters.

A novel bright reflective color STN-LCD with the ISR(Inner Scattering Reflector)structure has been developed for the first time in reflective color STN-CDs. The adoption of the ISR structure enables the LCD to demonstrate not only clear image without blur but also 2.5 times brightness as high as that of conventional reflectoive color STN-LCDs.

A liquid crystal color shutter for field sequential type high resolution CRY monitor was produced by combining color polarizers with ferroelectric liquid crystal polymer(FLCP)panels using plastic film substrates. For producing the color shutter, the optical properties of materials in FLCP panels were optimized. The FLCP panels showed high contrast ratio, good responsibility and high bending toughness. This color shutter was attached to monochromatic P45 CRY. This color monitor showed higher resolution than a usual color CRY on the market. The chromaticity was the same.

This paper describes a Geld sequential CRT using liquid crystal color shutter for ultra high-resolution display monitor. The color shutter realized by combining color polarizers with ferroelectric liquid crystal polymer(FLCP)panels using plastic film substrates. The method for designing the color shutter is described and the performance of the prototype is presented.

In order to develop a high quality EL display, highly efficient phosphors, optical design for thin-film multi-layers and improvenent of driving technique are required. In this paper, we proposed a capacitance coupled photo-conductive layer combined with an conventional EL device, and improved characteristics of hysterisis effects will be discussed by employing an SPICE simulation technique. In results, (a)the range of dark resistance adopted to the photo-conductive layer becomes wide by optimizing the coupling capacitance, (b)writing voltage is drastically reduced, and (c)simple and strict adjustment of writing and erasing voltage are possible. These effects will be attributed to the reduction of impedance mismatching between EL layer and photo-conductive layer. In addition, we found a kind of semi-stable operational mode existed around the normal mode, in which the several times of light-emissions are continuously repeated even after a pair of writing voltage pulse was removed. Detail analysis showed that the luminance increases monotonically with increasing the writing voltage, which may be a new memory effect and expected for the application to analog gray scale capability.

ZnO:Zn phosphor thin films have been prepared by PLD(Pulsed Laser Deposition)technique. Optical emission spectroscopy of the laser produced plume was used to characterize the deposition process. All deposited films are oriented to the c-axis of wurtzite ZnO crystal. The film , which shows efficient green PL emission, was prepared by controlling the substrate temperature around 250 ℃. At the present, it is difficult to control the oxygen vacancy concentration using post-annealing of the deposited films and also preparing the films with assisted reactive gasses. The emission ratio of O(777nm)/Zn(635nm)is related to the green PL intensity of the deposited films. By the monitoring these emission lines, deposition parameters such as laser nuence and targetsubstrate distance will be optimized to obtain an efficient ZnO:Zn phosphor thin film.

A blue emitting CaAl_2O_4:Eu^<2+>(CA:Eu^<2+>)phosphor was examined for PDP application. To improve the luminescent intensity the optimization of Eu concentration in CA was examined. Test PDP panels using synthesized CA:Eu^<2+> and commercial BaMgAl_<10>O_<17>:Eu^<2+>(BAM:Eu^<2+>)were fabricated by conventional process and their luminescent and driving properties were characterized. CA:Eu^<2+> with 2 mo1% optimized Eu concentration shows 60 % PL peak intensity of BAM:Eu^<2+> under 147 nm excitation. The luminance of CA:Eu^<2+> test panel is 41 % of that of BAM:Eu^<2+>. This panel shows the poor luminance maintenance during the panel operation compared with BAM:Eu^<2+> panel and the emission intensity after 300 hours driving is decreased to 40 % of initial intensity.

We have developed an XGA resolution. 150μm pitch 23" Plasma Display Rear Panel using transfer method. Address electrodes are made on a glass substrate with a photolithography with photosensitive paste including Ag and glass. A photosensitive liquid adhesive is coated on the substrate. On the other hand, a silicone rubber are made with intaglios of ribs replica. A photosensitive ceramic paste is filled into the intaglio of the rubber and is exposed to harden. The substrate is attached with alignment onto the replica and then the adhesive is exposed to set. The rubber is removed from the substrate. Thus the ribs are successfully transferred onto the glass substrate with the address electrodes.
