In order to develop an optical analysis tool for mulli-layer thin-film structure including an self-emitting layer, we have propose an four-division analytical model combined with multiple reflection of internal emission and the calculation of characteristic matrix in passive thin-film stack. The model is applied to the yellow and white light emitting electroluminescent(EL)devices with broad-band phosphors of ZnS:Mn and SrS:Ce, especially to the investigation of the relationship between the luminescence properties(luminance, color characteristics, efficiency and contrast ratio)and the reflection characteristics of rear electrode material. The experimental results show that the hlminance is unexpectedly reduced down to less than one third of the original intensity by replacing the rear electrode with lower reflectance materials. Optical redesign will be almost inevitable for optimizing the inverted structure with low reflective electrode. It is further clarified that the viewing angle behavior deteriorates with increasing the reflection of the rear electrode, and the key material to determine the visual quality of the display is not a blue phosphor but a red one. A theoretical model has been investigated with the ability to simulate the contrast ratio by deriving the outcoupling efficiency and the feature of panel reflection in the visible region. The contrast ratio is rapidly improved in the range less than 0.2 in terms of the internal refection of rear multi-layers. In particular, the ITO electrode is supposed to exhibit an excellent display quality among the low reflective materials, which is considered very important advantage for the outdoor application.

ZnS doped with Cu_xS were prepared by passing H_2S gas through a solution containing zinc and copper ions when using(NH_2)_2CS as a masking material for copper ions. The mixture of ZnS:Cu and NH_4Cl was thermally treated at 700 ℃ in argon gas to Prepare ZnS:Cu, Cl phosphor, then the phosphor was rapidly cooled after finishing the thermal treatment. The luminance-voltage characteristic of ZnS:Cu, Cl powder, electroluminescent(EL)devices fabricated in this work has been stabilized as 10 hours elapsed under The condition of 5 kHz sinusoidal wave voltage driviug. The device exhibits above 300 cd/m^2 in luminance at 1 kHz. The emission color is insensitive of driving frequency. The CIE color coordinates are around X=0.149 and Y=0.142 in a frequency range from 60 Hz to 3 kHz.

Cathodoluminescent properties, especially, aging-properties of CRT phosphors coated with In_2O_3 by sol-gel method were investigated at anode voltage of several kV. The aging properties greatly depend on the vacuum pressure in the chamber, electron beam density and anode voltage. The coating of phosphor by sol-gel method was effective for luminance deterioration at middle energy electron excitation. It seems that the ln_2O_3 thin layer suppress not only the interaction of phosphor surface with remained gasses in the chamber but also migration of host atoms to the surface.

Preparation of SrGa_2S_4:Ce thin films has been carried out by the multi-source deposition technique and it's structural and lIuminescent properties were characterized. The thin films show blue emission with good chromaticity. The dependence of the Iuminescence on Ga_2S_3/Sr flux ratio and annealing conditions were investigated, The film prepared at Ga_2S_3/Sr flux ratios of 60, and annealed at 850℃ showed high luminance with CIE co-ordinates of(0.11, 0.10). However these films were showing different PL and CL spectra. Results are discussed on the formation process of SrGa_2S_4 and it's luminescent property depending on the annealing atmosphere.

Fine particle Y2_O_2S:Eu and SnO_2:Eu red phosphors in submicron sizes(〜1μm)with spherical shapes has been synthesized from yttrium alkoxide - europium chloride and stannic chloride - europium chloride mixtures, respectively, by tuning the synthesis conditions. X-ray diffraction data indicate that the powder consists of single phase with high crystallinity. The fine grained phosphor shows improved luminance at low voltage excitations(<2 kV). Factors such as nature of solvent, firing temperature and duration are discussed with respect to the particle size, morphology, crystallinity and lumlnance of phosphors.

It is demonstrated that ZnO:Zn phosphor thin films can be continuously deposited by laser ablation using sintered ZnO:Zn pellets. The grain size of crystal estimated from the full width at half maximum of the (0002) X-ray diffraction peak of the thin film continuously increases with increasing laser shot. Photoluminescence(PL)and cathodoluminescence(CL)of ZnO:Zn thin films were observed. It has been found that the PL intensity strongly depends on the thickness of the thin film. The result also suggests that the reduction of light-emitting region due to the band bending effect takes place in ZnO:Zn thin films as well as that reported for powder phosphors. These thin films show weak CL.

We have developed the YF_3:Gd, Pr Phosphor shows a UV emission under 172nm excitation. The UV Emission is originated from Gd^<3+> ions. The photoluminescence(PL) intensity or YF_3:Gd, Pr is about 10 times of those of UV Phosphors

Blue PDP phosphor BaMgAl_<10>O_17:Eu^<2+>(BAM:Eu^<2+>)with β-alumina structure shows the luminance degradation at the panel production and panel operation due to the oxidation of activator and defect-generation in a host crystal. To prevent this luminance degradation, phosphor characteristics of a blue phosphor CaAl_2O_4:Eu^<2+>(CA:Eu^<2+>)with β-tridymile structure were investigated.. The photoluminescence(PL)intensity of CAEu^<2+>(1% Eu content)prepared by the two-step firing synthesis is about 50% of that of BAM:Eu^<2+> under 147 nm excited light. By baking the phosphors in air at 600 ℃, the PL luminance is decreased to 88 % for CA:Eu^<2+> and to 79 % for BAM:Eu^<2+>. The testing panel using CA:Eu^<2+> phosphor shows the same spectrum of powder phosphor. However the luminance of testing panel with CA:Eu^<2+> is still 35 % of that with commercial BAN;Eu^<2+> phosphor.

For the luminance saturation at the high driving frequency of AC color plasma display panel(AC-PDP), the effect of the nuorescence lifetime on the gray-scale expression was investigated. The characteristics of luminance versus gray-scale levels were measured for testing PDP panels with practical RGB phosphors, (Y, Gd)BO_3:Eu^<3+> Ba_<0.48>Sr_<0.5>Mg_<0.8>Al_<10>O_<17>:Mn^<2+> and BaMgAl_<10>O_<17>:Eu^<2+> respectively, The luminance saturation is observed for the red and green phosphor panels having long fluorescence lifetime. However the luminance saturation for 256 grayscale expression is not so large as considered from the overlapping of the waveforms of PDP light emission.

In order to improve the luminous efficiency for positive column PDP, DC memory drive scheme was examined with the object of reducing sustain discharge current. We contrived a new cell structure in the positive column cell to lower write voltage and to improve interference between cells at DC memory drive, and fabricated a positive column PDP with 3 electrodes in each display cell. Stable DC memory operation was obtained in the whole effective area and a luminous efficiency was improved to 1.4lm/W.

A sophisticated signal processing unit suitable for a full Hi-Vision PDP which has 1920 x 1080(x RGB)pixels, or whole pixels or Hi-Vision(HDTV), has been developed and displaying cxperiments were performed combining with the full-PDP. The unit is contstructed using the signal processing LSIs developed for "Hi-Vision PDP Nagano Model". The unit includes processings or deinterlacing with an improved motion detection, 2- dimensional image cnhancer and so on. As the result. The unit showed much better picture quality than a conventional signal processing unit. The full displaying of Hi-Vision by sophisticated signal processings and full Hi-Vision PDPs is considered as an ideal displaying method in the cra of digital Hi-Vision.
