Multimedia data broadcasting service is now on air in BS digital broadcasting, etc. in Japan. However, the present service is based on Japanese, therefore, it is necessary to multilingualize the service for foreigners to be informed widely. Because the displayed contents for data broadcasting are composed of content itself and the display layout information, considerations other than the translation of contents are necessary for the multilingualization. The main constrictions of presentation style for multilingualization of data broadcasting are character set encoding scheme and presentation or layout scheme, such as the change of the direction for text and screen layout. In this report, the subjects concerning the layout are mainly investigated. The layout is encoded using BML (Broadcast Markup Language), and the selection of suitable tag for transformation of language is carried out. Based on the fact that the languages are classified into 3 types largely, the simulations for data broadcasting services are made in Japanese, English and Arabic as the representatives for each type. The result shows that the transformation into the suitable layout for each language is possible; for example, when Arabic is selected at the receiver, the direction of characters and visual ordering of Monomedia components is inverted on the screen from "left-to-right" to "right-to-left".

This paper discusses about a bit allocation method for MPEG-2 Advanced Audio Coding (AAC). The AAC adopts 11 Huffman tables which have different sizes of large absolute values (LAV). We proposed to normalize the maximum DCT coefficient of a band be to the Huffman table's LAV. The bits saved for other DCT coefficients can be reallocated to other frame, which help in controlling the fluctuation in sound quality from frame to frame. Further on applying this bit-allocation method to the Mid/Side (L+R/L-R) stereo coding control method, stereo sound quality with high L/R channel correlation is made better. We confirmed these lead to an overall improvement in annoying distortion to the listener.

Recently, the action of the broadcasting digitalization with Broadcasting Satellite (BS), Communication Satellite (CS) and Terrestrial Broadcasting is proceeding as the national project. In this condition, data broadcasting service is expected to create new mobile services such as for handy phone, PDA, and car navigation system. Furthermore, in the ITS service field, many mobile users expect to be more convenient to get useful information from above new service. For example, they want to get the worthwhile information with movie about shopping or sightseeing area by digital broadcasting compared to the traditional one such as parking lot or traffic information. To meet these demands, we have been developing new information providing system with digital terrestrial broadcasting for mobile service. When it comes to start the information providing system by. MPEG-4 movie, we must investigate the relation between the MPEG-4 parameter such as bit rate or frame rate and the quality of the movie which effect greatly on the impression of viewer. Therefore, in this paper, we first show the quality verification system of MPEG-4 video for above purpose, and we report the result of above quality verification test applied for TV program.

An impedance analyzer and impedance bridge have been used on medium-wave antenna impedance measurement. Those measuring equipment have many difficulties under high voltage induced circumstances for measuring the antenna impedance at the same transmitting frequency waves from nearby radio stations. This new type medium-wave antenna measuring instrument can measure the antenna impedance with high accuracy under those noisy conditions.

The cavity-backed slot antenna is used as an element for the solar power satellite SPS2000. The antenna element is superior to others in mechanical strength and heat dissipation, and it tends to be a low profile structure. The authors have already proposed the cavity-backed slot antenna whose sidewalls consist of conductive posts. In this paper, we propose design methods of cavity-backed slot antenna with the posts, which are fed by an inverted-F element. Then, antenna parameters realizing the good impedance matching at the frequency of 2.45 GHz are derived. The effectiveness of the design method and antenna parameters is verified by experiments.

The JICA project of Research Center for Communications and Information Technology in KMITL was initiated in 1997 and will be terminated at the end of September 2002. The purposes of the project are the improvement of research capability and the education/research of graduate school in KMITL. In this paper, the summary of the project and its achievement are described.
