An antenna having a toroidal coil shape consisting of a fixed length wire is proposed. The antenna has a size of 1/15〜1/5 wavelength. In this paper the radiation characteristics are analyzed by the induced electromotive force method and the moment method. These results are compared with the experimental results. A fairly good agreement is obtained. We tried to establish empirical formulas as these results. For the limited size adopted in the paper, the antenna has a relatively high gain, and can be easily matched to a coaxial line.

DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communication) for VICS (Vehicle Information and Communication System) in Japan is composed of infrared beacons which are located along urban road and quasi-microwave beacons which are located along expressway. Its service has started since April 1996. While passing through the different two types of DSRC zones, it is required to maintain interoperability for the navigation system. Furthermore, it is desired to be easy installation of OBU (On-Board Unit). A multimedia OBU which ensure to amoothly communicate with the different types of beacons by using coprocessing procedure has been developed. This OBU also enable to be easily installed to the vehicle by using the multiplexing technique that the different types of DSRC signals and DC power supply are multiplexed on an one coaxial cable which connects with a head unit and a control unit.

In hybrid optical SCM for CATV systems, carriers are modulated by video signals or digital data, so amplitude of a multiplexed signal of these modulation signals is compressed compared with that of the carriers themselves, and frequency of clipping of the multiplexed signal at the laser threshold is decreased. Consequently, BER of the M-QAM signal in the practical hybrid SCM is lower than that of the experimental results. In this paper, we describe BER analysis method that can effectively estimate the BER performance in the practical hybrid SCM by using representative profiles of the modulation signals. The BER of the M-QAM signal, when assuming FDM signal with modulation signals, extremely improved compared with the BER for multiplexed signal of carriers. Furthermore, BER degradations due to clipping can be neglected for the AM signals in setting practical optical modulation indexes. We also study effective OMI ranges of AM and M-QAM signal by using the analysis method. By assuming AM signal with black picture, the OMI range is enlarged and particularly, the OMIs of AM signal agreed with practically setting value in AM-SCM transmission. This OMI range is more practical than that of former studies.

This paper discusses characteristics of the carrier interleavers for OFDM transmission systems through indoor hardware experiments. The carrier interleavings considered here are : i) group-interleaving, ii) carrier-interleaving within a group, and iii) two-stage interleaving (the combination of i) and ii)). We measured the required C/Ns (BER=2×10^<-4>) over two-path channels of D/U=10 dB with short (0.2μs) through long (25μs) delay times. The results show that the interleaving scheme and its parameters (the number of carriers per group) affect the required C/Ns. With suitable selection of the scheme, the interleaving gain can be about 2 dB or more. We also show the characteristic tendencies over multi-path channels with more than two-path are almost same as those in the two-path channels. Finally, we describe a few techniques for the frequency-domain equalizer and the Viterbi decoder so as to improve the transmission performance. Numerical examples show that improvement of 4 dB or more is realized by using CSI (channel state information) for the soft decision Viterbi Algorithm.

It is important to consider a cancer therapy from both sides of thermal and non-thermal effects in order to find the total effect due to electromagnetic wave irradiation in it. We consider the therapy from the total effect due to magnetic field irradiation without side effect through experiments. Non-thermal, thermal and composite experiments are done to consider the effect. Activity ratios are shown in figures and discussed. Obtained results are useful for cancer therapy.

Today the medical applications of the microwaves are gaining popularity in various area of clinical treatment. The authors et al. have been studying on the characteristics of the coaxial-slot antenna for interstitial microwave hyperthermia. Although it is an invasive technique, the interstitial hyperthermia is considered to be effective to large volume and deep-seated tumors. In this report, some calculated results of the SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) patterns in the multi-layered media are displayed. Next, the temperature patterns inside the human body are calculated for effective treatment planning.

Many different phantoms have proposed as the human head model for experimental estimation of the interaction between the human head and electromagnetic fields around. In this report, a solid phantom is introduced as the human head model realizing the same relative dielectric constant and conductivity as brain tissue. This brain-equivalent solid phantom makes it possible to accomplish highly reliable and precise estimation of specific absorption rate (SAR) in biological tissue. Brain-equivalent solid phantom models of cubes and spheres are fabricated. Measurements are performed to estimate the SAR in the human head models exposed to microwave sources by using the thermographic method.
